Ugly woman or what?

I saw a news flash that makes zero sense to me. A woman has an 11 year old dog and walks it by a lake. She proceeds to push the elderly dog off the dock and does not help it so dog dies. Passersby tried to rescue the poor pooch but to no avail.
What?? Why have a dog for all those years and then be the devil? I am not getting it. She grew tired of pooch?? How can a sane human watch a sentient being drown? I am just not putting two and two together. The idea makes my heart hurt bad enough that I want to go throw up.
This morning Sally pooch lay on my bed as usual. I told her she needed to get up to go outside for bathroom duties. Sally is about 9 now. Her poor hind legs are getting weary. I finally steadied her, holding her middle from underneath. She swayed but got her doggie motor going and after a few minutes walked better. I can't imagine harming her though she happens to be aging- like me, Sally is aging.

My first response is anger but then so many questions come to mind. How old was the woman? Was she mentally challenged? Did she suffer from dementia or some other affliction of the mind? Was the dog in poor health? Did she believe she was doing the animal a kindness?
If she was just tired of the dog, then I go along with @andriaperry.

@DWDavis I believe the lady was in her mid 60s. She let the dog walk around the pond and of course the dog got tired and then she pushed it off the dock. I have had animals put down BUT I also had a Vet do it kindly. If I hadn't had the money for the procedure, I would have asked friends for a loan.

This is true, I have to say no one in their right mind would do that. Even serial killers that kill animals as children are mental.

@rebelann I don't know about that. I was out noodling around in the raspberry patch, thinking it would be easy to fall. I said out loud, "Leah!" Next blink she was next to me, waiting to see if I needed to grab hold. I hadn't intended to call her but she must have been keeping tabs on me.

Poor Sally, our Beau was like that for about the last year of his 15.5 years. We finally had to put him down but it broke our hearts. Maybe she could not afford to have her dog put down? I know they arrested her but she doesn't seem to have tried to explain.

@BelleStarr I never thought I'd live with another Lab mix but due to circumstances, we share life with Leah, black Lab sweetie. Her and I work together. If I get into an iffy situation, I call Leah to me and she lets me lean on her until I get to ground where I feel steady on my feet. Leah has a huge heart.

@BelleStarr Love can be so painful and yet we're better for having a good dog in our lives.

She needs the same fate as her dog. That is inhumane. If the dog was too old, it should have been put down. Maybe she couldn't afford it? Still no excuse.

@LindaOhio The price of having an animal put down is pretty awful and yet its the decent thing to do if the pup is hurting that much. Maybe she should have asked friends and family to lend her the money??

@sallypup Something. Anything is better than drowning the poor animal. My heart breaks for that dog.

She should be given a few hours head start to run then let blood hounds track her.

@Hate2Iron I would never turn my back on the woman if I was near her.
