If the subject is English, lessons are grammar, reading and composition. If the subject is Arithmetic, lessons are addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and a gradation of mathematical formulae and equations as the level of education becomes higher. If the subject is Science, Natural Science are basic, then comes Biology, Chemistry, Physics, etcetera. If the subject is Music, notes and rhythm are introduced in the fundamentals.
Yes, US primary education is lacking. A teacher friend who got a teaching job in America was shocked when she learned that spelling list in fifth grade includes beautiful and wonderful. No wonder, she said, that our students who migrate to America land in the the honors list, when here in our country, these children are just average.
The problem, I think, with US education, is the curriculum itself. For example, in English, the basics such as noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, conjunction and interjection must be mastered by fourth grade. The cause and effect must have been introduced at this grade, too, plus critical thinking. By fifth grade, Reading must include Literature from around the world. By sixth grade, students must be writing compositions.
Education requires serious study, academic and non-academic, at least six to eight hours each day. The non-academics include home economics, physical education, etcetera.
In other words, the discipline must be instilled in the students.

Agreed, word lists don't teach vocabulary as well as reading literature from around the world. In other words, being exposed to a wider variety of words.
There is a place for rote memorizations n on education, but repeating back what the teacher thought isn't education. It's simpky regurgitating information.

I thought the problem is they spend way to much time on useless crap you don't need to memorize and not enough time on things that actually matter in everyday life. Like when I was in school we spent a ton of time memorizing the periodic table but zero time on how to apply for a job, or cook, or do your taxes.

It's what happens when we let bureaucrats take over the school system.

Hopefully the practical application of the effects of energy on the three states of matter.
I was never good enough in math to take physics, so that's just my best guess. ??
