Identity theft - update

Some time ago I wrote a discussion about my friend who became a victim of identity theft, and this is an update. At that time the scammers got access to his digital ID. They used his name and managed to borrow $6000. Since that time both positive and negative things happened. The positive things first: The police is involved now, and my friend has screen shots that contain some the conversations with the scammers. He got a new digital ID, so it it not possible to abuse the old one anymore. If they try they won't be able to log in. Unfortunately the scammers managed to borrow a lot more money before it was stopped. In the beginning they 'only' borrowed $6000. Now the amount is $30000! $6000 is bad enough, but $30000 is such a large amount of money. I really hope that they catch those scammers

He had to go to the police immediately, I hope he will have not to pay so much to learn the lesson.

@LadyDuck Yes, it is getting more complicated now than it was in the beginning. It is very stressful for him, but at least he has a lawyer now. The police is still investigating. It will take a while before he knows how it is all going to turn out.

He knows he has made a mistake. He told me yesterday: "If I had gone to the police right away, the scammers wouldn't have managed to get so much money before it was stopped" He has a lawyer now, and I am happy that he isn't trying to handle this on this own anymore.

Who's gonna pay for the $30000? It seems that the system has a lot of glitches or loopholes, hoping they'll make a good decision to solve this

I don't know what they are going to do about the money. I also think about that. One of the online loan companies that the scammers used says that my friend has to pay for the loan. He is going to discuss this with his laywer.

@tech40 I don't know. The police is still investigating the case. I was shocked when I discovered the amount of money that is involved by now.

@Porcospino They don't have an option to check where they're gonna use it? I hope he will win the case

@Porcospino That would be terrible if he is responsible.

I am not sure what is going to happen to the money they borrowed. In many of those cases (identity theft) the victims don't have to pay the money. We have a law saying that you aren't responsible for documents you didn't sign. In some cases the victim still has to pay for instance if they didn't' report it to the police right away. My friend didn't report it immediately, so am not sure if he will have to pay or not.

@rakski Yes, I hope they find the person. Other people have experienced the same thing as my friend, and the scammer is probably going to continue if he/she/they don't get caught.

@Hannihar Yes, it is very sad. It was a person my friend met on a social networking site. She pretended that she just wanted to be his friend, but she had very different intentions.

@Porcospino That is a lot of money and it is so sad that there are those that do that to others. They do not know if the person needs that money or not.

@JustBhem Yes, they managed to use his name several times before it was stopped. He is very worried about it. It is easy to understand that, I would also be extremely worried if it happened to me. I hope that they catch the people who did it.

Yes, fortunately he reported it. His old digital ID doesn't work anymore. Even if they try they won't be able to log in, so they are able not take any more money. I hope that they get caught soon.
