A beanie for a good cause

The evening after we arrived home from our trip to the continent we went to an Australian Rules football match courtesy of our friends who have corporate membership of their club. We hadn’t been to the Optus Stadium before and were very impressed. I’ll write more about it later. At the stadium, Vince bought a beanie. These were being sold to raise funds for motor neurone disease (MND) through a campaign known as the ‘Big Freeze’. MND is an incurable, degenerative disease which gradually robs a person of all function. The campaign was begun by MND Victoria but accelerated when a Dr Davis, Pat Cunningham and football legend Neale Daniher came on board. Dr Davis was diagnosed in 2011 at the age of 33 and has since passed away. Daniher has had a highly successful football career and was diagnosed in 2013. In four years, the FightMDN campaign has raised more than $40 million. Thousands of beanies have been sold as part of the campaign and online stocks have run out. Vince’s beanie makes him look like a homeless man but that’s okay. We’re pleased to do our little bit to support the cause.

The effects are similar to those caused by multiple sclerosis. Both are very cruel diseases. Hopefully the money will help find a cure.

@crazyhorseladycx It is extremely difficult for all involved. It would be great if your aunt's MS was in remission.

That's a nice gesture on your part to support them for a noble cause. My younger daughter is knitting few beanies to be sold at our Christmas fund raising event for blind and other disability children. She has finished one and started with a second one.

@arunima25 Thanks. I like doing the baby beanies as they are only a 4" circumference. Sometimes I can do one in an evening.

That is good of your daughter. I'm about to start crocheting more beanies for premature babies. I prefer crocheting as it is faster.

@JudyEv She also prefers crocheting. It is faster and easier. So good that you are always busy with something productive and for a noble cause. God bless!!

Poor Vince, I am not sure he would appreciate to know you called him a "homeless man". What they are doing is great and I am glad they have raised a good amount of money already.

I'm so sorry to hear there's another degenerative disease taking peoples lives. That's an awesome campaign idea.

MND is quite like multiple sclerosis. Both are very cruel. Hopefully one day a cure will be found for some of these dreadful illnesses.

MND is a terrible disease and like so many others needs more research

It's a shocker - really cruel and MS is another. Some illnesses became 'flavour of the month' so to speak and receive more funding than other diseases.

@JudyEv Very true, sometimes the research seems to be driven by the latest bit of tragic news that the press pick up

It is said that Stephen William Hawking suffered from MND also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. You mentioned in a post that you knitted many beanies for Nepalese kids.

Yes, that's right. The Nepalese beanies went to children who had lost their hair through cancer treatments. I am going to start making more soon but this time for premature babies.

So, that is what it's called. Those beanies would be very useful in winter or something.

Does this MND includes ALS?

I think ALS is another name for it. I think there are a group of diseases with much the same symptoms and outcomes.

That's good of your mom. I crochet tiny beanies for premature babies and the ones I crocheted for Nepal went to children with cancer.
