Did you ever wonder what grocery stores do to make you spend more and spend more time in the store? The Deli, Bakery and Produce Departments are at the beginning of your shopping trip for a good reason... The Produce Department has a lot of bright colors to put you in a good mood and inspire you to buy more. Experts suggest that you start in the middle of the store where the bland boxes and cans are. The Deli and Bakery have smells of roasting chickens and other prepared foods and fresh baked bread to tantalize you and make you hungry and spend more. And what about the sight of all those Deli meats and cheeses? Photo Credit: Pixabay

Yes, that's one of the many tricks. Another trick is to put the cheap items on the lowest shelves so that you have to bend down to get them and the expensive ones on the shelves you have in front of your eyes.

@MALUSE That's very true. I've seen the store brands on the bottom shelf and the brand names at eye level.

@LindaOHio The store brands are often made by the same firms which produce the brand names. This is true, for example, for washing powder.

I've never been an impulse shopper; so I'm not tempted. But hubby does all the shopping now...He's bad.

That's for sure. And never let your husband shop hungry. All he gets is sweets and snacks.

Interesting. Thought produce was first 'cause we all buy that stuff more.

I always thought they had the produce at the beginning b/c everyone goes in with the intention of being healthy and "behaving". Same reason the ice cream is at the end.

That's good to keep in mind....I try not to shop that way now that I am on a diet (most of the time). But thanks for sharing!
