The CDC (Center for Disease Control) has warned swimmers about a parasite, Crpto (Cryptosporidium) present in pools and waterparks. It is a fecal parasite that can live in the water for days and is resistant to chlorine and some chemicals. It can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea that can last for weeks. It can also cause fever, stomach pain, dehydration and weight loss. The young, the old and those with a compromised immune system are most at risk. Symptoms appear 2-10 days after being infected. The most common cause is from swallowing pool water. Livestock can also be infected, so be sure to wash your children's hands and your own with soap and water, not hand sanitizers, after handling livestock at a zoo or county fair. It looks like I'm going to have to post my annual article about swimming in stagnant pond water again because this is a hot summer and one that welcomes infection. Thank you for stopping by and reading this cautionary post. Photo Credit: Pixabay

So we can't swim in freshwater or pools. Should we give up swimming all-together?
