My First Skydive Postponed Due to Weather

Today was supposed to be the day! After months of planning, today was going to be my first skydive. I was pretty nervous all morning, but felt comfortable knowing my life was in good hands with my tandem instructor, who happens to be a co-worker of mine. She is an amazing persona and a former Army captain, so I knew I had nothing to worry about! Got to the airport this afternoon, signed all the necessary paperwork and release forms, paid the fees, and sat through the training videos and staff safety speeches, only to be informed that all afternoon jumps had to be cancelled due to strong thunderstorms moving into the area. What a bummer for me, as I had eagerly been anticipating this for months. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to try again at a later date. Have any of you ever been skydiving? Or have any of you ever highly anticipated something exciting, only to have it postponed or cancelled on you? They made the right call on the weather. It is storming so badly right now that I can't see anything outside the window right now except a solid wall of rain. Thankfully, I made it home just in time before the skies let loose!

WHOA! I am way too scared to skydive. You can't even pay me to skydive My sister said it was a blast though. I don't have the guts too! I hope you get to reschedule soon when time/weather permits. Enjoy!

@moffittjc Yes, she went with a group of friends. No way. I would not go. Is it just you going to go sky diving, will you bring your kids?

@infatuatedbby No, it was just me and my co-worker, who is a skydiving instructor. She was going to be my tandem partner on my first jump. I don't think either of my kids would want to go skydiving.

I know you were disappointed but they had everyone's safety in mind. I don't think you would of wanted to be up there when the cut lose. I wanted to go sky diving years ago but it never happened.

@moffittjc Good way to handle people like that. Some people just don't understand how dangerous it is to be in water when it is lightning.

I wasn't angry or anything, just disappointed. I totally understand the safety thing. As an aquatics director, I close our city's municipal pools at the first sound of thunder. Believe, me I'm not the most popular guy around when I make that decision. So I am sympathetic to others who have to make similar calls due to inclement weather. Safety first!

My mum @nannacroc once won a trip in a hot air balloon. My dad and I went (because Mother didn't want to) only to have it cancelled in the morning due to the weather. We didn't have a completed wasted trip, though, because we stayed in a lovely place and, as the weather improved throughout the day, we had a wander and visited a few places in the area. It was nice to have some time out with my dad anyway. And, yes, I have skydived. I'm glad I did it - it was enjoyable but I don't think it is something I intend to do again. I had never even been in a plane before then. I was volunteered by members of my Slimming World group (I'd been too heavy to jump previously) and raised, I think, around £500 for a local charity. I had support of my partner (co-incidentally also a former Army captain who did over 400 jumps throughout his career with paras and medical corps). I'm not sure I'd have had the confidence if it wasn't for him. My nephew was the one who came with me, though. He didn't do the jump but he kept me company as I had to stay in a hotel the night before, and my nephew took some photos and videos. I hope that you do get to do your skydive. I think I'll stick to abseiling and archery!

@moffittjc Unfortunately, we didn't get the balloon ride. As we'd had to pay out for a hotel and travel to get there, we couldn't make another date. My mum sold the balloon ride on eBay as it was still valid for another trip. I'd still like to do that, though. Actually, there are lots of things I would like to do - very much hoping that I can ride in a helicopter, perhaps even learn to fly one eventually! I love the air and the water. I am quite jealous of my eldest son as he is about to go off on a cruise for the 3rd time! I have said that I believe my love of being high up may stem from being much shorter than the people around me. :D

Wow, that's really awesome that your first time up in a plane was when you skydived! I'm happy that you did it! And no need to do it again if you don't want to, because now that you've done it once, you can cross it off your bucket list! Did you ever get to make up the cancelled hot air balloon ride? It was nice that you got to spend time with your dad even though you didn't get to go up in the balloon. I've ridden in hot air balloons several times, I had a great time on each flight!

@pumpkinjam Where is your son taking a cruise to? I have been on many cruises throughout the Caribbean and Mexico, I would one day love to go on a cruise in the Mediterranean or all around Greece. You seem like a very adventuresome person, just as I am. I'm going to check out some of your other posts and see if you've written about any other adventures!

Yeah, I was sort of a bundle of nerves. But I did get to hang out with some pretty cool people at the airport for a little while today! The skydiving place is not at the Gainesville airport, it's farther east at the Palatka airport. I guess our airport here in Gainesville is a little too busy for them to allow parachuters clogging up the airways!

It was about 15 years ago that I was supposed to go on my first skydive. My best friend was getting married, and at his bachelor's party we all got drunk and decided to go skydiving. However, when we got to the place, they wouldn't let us do it because we were drunk!

I offered my wife that option for an anniversary gift, or a ride on a hot air balloon, or a trip to the coast. She chose the coast. We have done parasailing, not the same by any means, but we were up well above 250 feet and cruised there above Puerta Vallerta For a good five minutes. It was fun and scary and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

I've done parasailing (on a cruise in the Caribbean), and ridden in a hot air balloon before. Loved both experiences. Next up on my bucket list is skydiving. The only things I don't have a desire to do is bungee jumping, but I'm sure if the opportunity ever arose, I could be talked into it. I won't go seeking out bungee jumping on my own, but if I'm ever somewhere and that has it and any of my friends or family want to do it, I will probably cave in and give it a try.
