Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder

July 8, 2019 2:38am CST
I recently found out that I might have Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder (DSPD). It when you cannot sleep at a "normal" schedule - you may sleep from 3PM to 11PM or you might go to sleep at 5AM and wake up at 1PM. But you never go to bed around 9PM and wake at 7AM like the average person. It's not your average "night owl", it's a genuine disorder that you will struggle to cope with. You might miss time with your family because they sleep 10PM-8AM but you sleep 8AM-10PM. Even if you get your schedule "fixed", it's very easy to disrupt. One hour off can throw your schedule. It's not common for a person with DSPD to work a 9-5; some can find ways and medication to help them work that schedule, but most will be working second and third shifts. Unfortunately, it's also accompanied by depression and anxiety. You lack vitamin D and occasionally interaction with others you love. It's also commonly misdiagnosed with insomnia. I thought I'd share - apparently it's not heard of, even within the medical field. I found it on Reddit from others diagnosed, brought it up to my doctor, and now I'm going in for neurological and sleep testing to get diagnosed, assuming it's what I have.

That’s interesting and new to know. I sleep from 1 or 2am to 6am but that is on,y because I’m a night owl and catch my second win around the time the kids go to bed.

Try a 45 min walk before sleeping if possible. Pls avoid sedatives, not good.

I can understand your problem. Whatever it is, this thing is quite bothering for a working person. I would like to know what your doctor recommends in this regard.
