Have you even been a victim of gossips?

In the Philippines, gossiping is very common. In the workplace, in school, in the entire neighborhood or even at home, people gossip and fabricate stories to ruin someone. In fact, it becomes the favorite pastime of some and whoever passes by will be the topic of their senseless chats. If a girl is with a boy, people gossip. If a household bought expensive stuff, people gossip. If a husband comes home late, people gossip. No matter what the situation is, people find something to gossip about. Is this also common in your place?

I suffered this gossip in high school. All because a step brother decided he wanted to hurt me as much as he could. To this day I do not understand his motivation, nor does it matter. That was a very long time ago. I like a quote from Oscar Wilde about this very topic: There is only one thing worse than people talking about you, having no one talking about you.

"Having no one talking about you" is worse? May I know why?

@Bhadine Oscar Wilde was a writer, as am I. If no one is talking about you, you are not selling books. -- that's my take on it -- But with Wilde I'm not so sure that is what he meant. He was always a controversial figure, very witty and seemed to enjoy attention, even if it was negative.

Since we live in the same country, yes. When I moved back to my parents house year 2013, I heard from my cousins that neighbors are talking about me. And it was awful, they said that I was hit by a karma that is why I got sick.

That's what I hate about gossips. Instead of feeling bad because you got sick, they even make up stories that you deserve it even if they do not even know the real story. Will that make them happy?

Does it mean it is also rampant in your country? I thought it is only us who are very critical to other people's lives.

Gossip is not something I never hear. It must be a family thing, or a close neighbour hood. We have neighbours but none gossip...it also could be our age, we are old, I think younger gossip....

It is not the case in your country. Everyone gossips especially the old folks who have nothing better to do with themselves.

I don't know if gossip is that common here but I think people gossip everywhere. We all want to know what's happening in the family and neighborhood.

You have a point. Maybe the difference is, some want to know because they care, while others gather information so that there are a lot more things they can say about that particular person.

Oh yes, for sure. Some co-workers told others that I got married because I am pregnant. I got pregnant after 6 months from the wedding.

Of course, I have been a victim of gossiping just like anybody else in the Philippines. Sometimes, I wonder what those people heard about me as I don´t know them and they are scared of me. I was even an excuse for one of my relatives when she doesn´t like to go with her friends. I am not really bad but I am a frank person and say what I think especially if I am used or abused.

I pity those gossipers. I wonder what would be their future.
