I'm not sure what you are looking for here. For me, someone's venting becomes too much when it begins interfering in my own world. I love to be there for friends and people in general, but when it becomes an every day occurrence -- them venting to me and they are not doing anything to change their situation, I will have to look closely. I may have to decide what's more important. My sanity or listening to their issues.

@JeahNika I've had to do more permanent distancing in the past. But for those whose friendship I value I will up the stakes a bit. I will mention my view point. "If this is bothering you, why do you not take steps to change it?" If they throw excuses back at me I might even challenge those.
