Here is a conservation Success............

In 1970 this bird was rapidly headed toward extinction. The use of the Pesticide DDT created a major issue for The Peregrine Falcon. The substance entered the food chain after being sprayed on crops and the Falcon being at the top of that chain ingested amounts of it. The problem for the Falcon was that it caused the egg shells to be super thin. So thin that when the bird would sit on its nest, it would break them and thereby kill the offspring. In the late 1980's the Peregrine Falcon had recovered well enough that it was removed from the endangered list. We humans can make a difference. We can change the direction of our destructive influences. But it requires us to put in the effort to make a change. As I head out to work today, (Volunteering at a Park as an Interpretive Host) I was thinking about how we can make a difference. Any response from me will come tonight after my shift. Photo is mine...

It makes me so happy when I hear that an animal is out of the endangered list. I think conservation is really becoming more and more important as the years go on and that is great.

I sure hope you are right. I've seen some pretty thoughtless people out there who simply don't care. I've also seen people who dedicate their lives to making a difference. Me, I put time in because it is something I deeply believe in. I have the time now that I am reitred. But I also enjoy talking to people and showing them what they may have never seen before.

@cperry2 I feel like these younger generations really care about the world. While boomers are saying these kids and young adults are stuck in our phones, but really a lot of these generations are learning more and more about the world and how to cure it thanks to our phones and finally doing something about it.

@DesirousDreamer I sure hope so. Your generation is the one that is going to inherit all the problems my generation and those before have created. With an added caveat,. you can not put it off until later, the issue is becoming critical.

This is too true. We humans can be blind sometimes. Often we just do not realize the impact our actions will have.

That's great that the falcon has been removed from the endangered list. It doesn't happen too often.

Sadly that is all too true. In fact, I know of only one other off the top of my head and that is the grey whale. It was down to a population of around 2000 in the 1930's but thanks to a movie actor who had a meeting with the Mexican President back then, some barrier were put ot to stop whalers from going into the coves where the calves were born. This past year the population of this gentle giant has soared to more than 25,000 there is talk of removing it from the endangered list as well.

@cperry2 That would be wonderful. Japan is back to whaling round our shores again which is a great shame.

@JudyEv I agree, it is a shame. And it so unnecessary. Yet, they have never really quit whaling, Norway is another that continues despite world opinion against it.

@cperry2 Inspiring post. It always makes me sad when I hear of animals being extinct or close to extinction. I wish that this could happen more often. But it gets so hard when so many people don't care or are doing things to put animals in danger. Especially those morbid people who hunt for fun. It's actually sickening.

@cperry2 That is true. But I also mean those who hunt just for fun as if animals were a trophy. You know the ones who kill animals just to place their heads on the wall or fur on the ground like it was a rug.

@VivaLaDani13 I never cared for that kind of hunting. Where is the fun in killing something? They have a right to life just like I do.

Yeah, well, I understand. There is little reason for anyone to hunt today, there is more than enough food available. But then too, there are some who would strongly disagree with me on that.

Humanity must be more friendly with the animals that surround us, this planet belongs to everyone, to continue the conservation of these beautiful animals

I agree wholeheartedly. That's why I spend so much of my time volunteering, so I can help them understand a tiny bit more.

me too. I've seen a few around here, they are magnificent birds. And I got to see one in the midst of attacking it's prey, Those birds are so fast It is hard to imagine, and even harder to describe.

@cperry2 How wonderful well done. I too have just retired in March so I am still finding my feet but I will do some kind of voluntary work somewhere! Enjoy your retirement! It is nice to be able to do all the fun things you could not when you were at work isn't it!

Thank you for that. It's funny, when I was a working stiff, I rarely thought much about such things. Now that I have the time in retirement, it seems to always be there in front of me. Of course one of my volunteer jobs is at a Science Center, part of the Oregon State University Marine Studies Initiative. So I have lots of exposure to what is being done and sometimes the people who are leading the way.

@garymarsh6 small warning. I sometimes feel we are busier now than when I worked. We've had to back off a bit because we just didn't have the energy to do all that people wanted us too.

Hopefully, more human beings will become more concerned and take better care of our environment and all who live in it. So glad the falcons are off the endangered list. They are one of my favorites.

That can certainly help. But if you do not get the heart of the people, those who are doing things that cause harm, then they will go right on with what they are doing. To effect change, you have to reach into people and show them the harm of their actions. You have to give them a reason to care. Only then can change happen.
