Now I Know Why MyLot Says No

I have always wondered why myLot has a policy against posting jokes. After all, they are just humor. What harm could they do?
I just discovered the reason. I belong to another site that is specific to one state. It is for pictures of art and photos taken by site members.
Lately, people have posted jokes that offended other people. Most weren't bad but mostly tacky. Someone posted a joke that was not porn but people thought it was. It caused a big hullabaloo that you would not believe.
People were getting suspended from the site left and right over various jokes.
Most of the time was spent on talking about all these problems and not on that beautiful state. MyLot was wise in banning jokes.

@akalinus There's lots people can discuss about a recipe. People can say they make theirs a different way and explain the different method. They might share a story about something their grandmother used to make. Granted, the recipe has to be written like a discussion, not like a recipe.

@akalinus I don't know if jokes are not allowed here, but sometimes jokes may hurt others. In India jokes about a particular community had evoked protests.

@Shivram59 Yes, but they always offend someone and then the politician has to spend time trying to repair the damage and saying he is sorry or whatever.

@akalinus Exactly. Four days back a senior member of our parliament from the opposition made an obscene comment about the speaker of the lower house who is a lady and yesterday he had to apologise to her.

A very good reason, of course! There are actually a number of reasons apart from the one you mention. First of all, a joke by itself can hardly be considered a 'discussion' because there isn't really any response to a joke other than "Ha ha!" (or "*groan*"!). Secondly, most jokes will have been copied and pasted and won't be original.
It is, of course, quite possible to be both original and funny as well as making a valid point that's worth discussing. Admin judges everything on its merits here, which is why the Guidelines are called 'Guidelines' rather than 'Rules'.

I always wondered about that too..most jokes are harmless..but I could see where they could become cause for concern, and offensive to certain groups.

@akalinus Yes, and even if it didn't, some things are probably only funny to a particular culture, the references might be off.

@snowy22315 That's true too. The joke may make reference to a cultural thing or play on words that others would not understand.

There is no discussion with a joke. This is a discussion type site. I agree with what Jim said in this instance. It has to be written in a certain way.

@LadyDuck They do it to get readers. Writing should fulfill the promise of the headline. It is childish and stupid. Something like, Look what this father and daughter were caught doing on tape. If you read the story, they were dancing at her wedding. It is stupid.

It is always curious to me why sites consider and discard various types of content.
The internet is the greatest, and worst thing ever invented, simultaneously!

@DocAndersen Thank you, I remember it from my kid's high school in the city. The principal told the parents that the school represents the worst in human behavior and also the best. I apply that to the internet now.

Not everyone has the same sense of humor. It is also a cultural thing.

but if they ban jokes, how will I ever find out why the chicken crossed the road?
(no, it's better that they're banned. everyone has a different sense of humor. what one person finds funny, another may find it offensive)
