Is there 'destiny'? Is it that things happen as they are destined for each of us?

This is a question that has been there in my mind. Today I read in news paper two reports about accidents involving more than four members of each family. In both instances these family members were travelling for worship/returning after worship of their favourite God. It is told in some scriptures that things happen as they are destined and as per our 'karma'. We all breathe the same air; The same water quenches the thirst of everyone. There are many names but He is One, We all breathe the same air. The same water quenches the thirst of all. The names may be many but He is One, This leads us to concept of believing in Almighty --- may be in different names. Some of us believe and some do not believe. I have been brought up by my mother inculcating the concept of 'belief in God,'and I believe fully. I always pray and think and fear about 'wrong experiences/bad experiences'. True I cannot stop a good/bad experience, I wish to know your view on this.
