My Knee Surgery

Hi Friends,
I'm back to report that my knee surgery last week went well. For those of you who didn't know, I'd been having knee problems for the past several weeks, consisting of a sudden "locking up" of my knee that was accompanied by terrible pain. I would have to "walk it out", which was painful, but would work (I could hear a lot of snapping and it felt like my knee had almost come out of joint and had to be put back right).
A trip to my orthopedist and subsequent MRI revealed that a piece of cartilage had broken off and was zipping around in there, causing mayhem. It would get caught in the joint at times, which caused the painful seizing up; taking a few steps would dislodge it and cease the pain. However, since this could happen several times a day, it needed to be fixed!
So, last week I had arthroscopic surgery to remove the errant bit of cartilage and smooth the bone where it had been damaged. Because it was arthroscopic surgery, only two small incisions were required--one on each side. Smaller incisions mean much less pain and shorter healing time.
Hope you get a laugh out of the picture I took of what I wrote on my good knee to make sure they got the right one!

I'm getting better very fast! My stitches are out now, and I am walking without crutches, so I'm doing fine.

Thank you--I got the idea from all those horror stories of operations that were done on the wrong body part!

Glad that your knee surgery went well ! What you wrote on your knee might make the orthopedist be convulsed with laughter.

The nurses and the anaesthesiologist got a good laugh out of it, but they saw it before the surgery. I hope someone showed the surgeon, too, but I forgot to ask him about it when I had my first follow-up!

haha, did you really write that?
I'm glad your surgery went well. I'm going to eventually have to have knee replacements. My knees have dislocated easily ever since I was a kid, which really was not a good thing in P.E. in high school. There are exercises I do - or am supposed to -- to strengthen the cartilige. But at least one of them will need to be fixed. The knee replacements are much better than they used to be, they have great success with them. But I'm not there yet.
I hope that totally solves your knee issue.

Oh, absolutely--that's a pic I took the morning before my surgery. They thought it was very cute. I have heard that people are absolutely thrilled with their knee replacements, but they do wear out and have to be replaced again after about 15 years. So I'm with you--definitely want to wait a bit!

Yes, it was really half joking and half self-protection, but they were very good about making sure of the correct knee beforehand--several people asked me, and they also marked it. Still glad I did it!

I'm happy to say that it's almost completely back to normal, although I didn't realize it would take quite this long, since I've been out of physical therapy since October!

LOL, I had to have my fun, but it was a good preventative measure, as well!
