Our annual trip to London also coincides with the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy, on Piccadilly. Last year we were able to visit this on our way home, and it would be great if we can do so again this year.
The Summer Exhibition has been going for more than 250 years and it has a fascinating history. It is the world's largest open-submission exhibition.
Artists submit thousands of works for consideration and only a small proportion get through the selection procedure. Even so, the exhibition spaces are crammed full with paintings, drawings, designs, sculptures, and more.
Many of the works are offered for sale - at wildly varying prices. One does sometimes wonder why anyone would want to have some of the pieces on their wall, but there's little accounting for taste!
It's certainly a fun exhibition - worth a visit if you can manage it.
