Teaching primary on Sundays

It’s been awhile since I’ve been on mylot. I’ve been busy with work and with church and of course spending time with my teens. Last year, I made the decision to get baptized as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints. I’m still attending, as are my children. I was given a calling to be primary teacher after sacrament on Sundays. I teach the 5 year old group. While it may seem strange to have a new member teaching the children, I think it was a way to kill two birds with one stone. The church got me more involved and to create my lesson plan I have to look up the scriptures, but in my case the primary lessons are from the Bible as opposed to the Book of Mormon so I’m already an old pro so to speak since I grew up in a heavily catholic household and even taught catechism in church as a teen to the 6 and 7 yr olds preparing for their first communion. It’s been fun though learning the primary songs with the children. They’re about to make some changes soon though as the children age up. The 4 yr olds look a bit challenging though. I’m not sure I want the group as they turn 5. They are beautiful children but way too rambunctious for my current level of patience. All in all, I’ll pray about it. Maybe the kids will settle down as they mature. Maybe being in kindergarten all week will show them how children should properly behave in school, but considering the 3 yr olds behave better... I’m not sure how I feel about it. Lol

You got this! :) I hope you continue to enjoy it, and that the children aren't too rambunctious. When I used to substitute, I found I could handle the kindergarten class better than the older kids, but that's probably because I'm not fond of the older kids acting like kindergarteners lol.

I might request to move to nursery instead. I haven’t decided. I’m hoping I can move up with my current class, but I do like working with kids.

@acrogodess And the nursery would be babies and/or toddlers? That's always fun. :) I do enjoy working with kids too, even though it really has been a while.

It's definitely going to be a challenge to teach young children. I hope you succeed.

I’ve taught small children before. I had a class of 16 four yr olds when I worked at the ymca, but the 4 yr olds in primary are substantially more rambunctious than the other kids... and it’s less children in primary lol.

Yeah. There are two that have legitimate special needs and I’m fully capable of dealing with those but I would prefer to move up with my current group

I pity you, it's not easy to deal with boys of those ages.

The girls in this particular class are just as difficult

@acrogodess Sorry, for the translation I should have said children and not boys. But in general friend, these ages are very difficult when teaching. But I assure you, if you manage to get out of this test alive, you will be able to face any age group. The experience will strengthen you. (Please excuse me, I didn't answer you before, I explain it to you in my discussion "Can you imagine feeling like a dog with a chain and a muzzle?") check it please.

Hello Lissette, i probably understand how you feel, i was 18yrs old when i was called as a nursery assistant leader in our local ward with ages 18months until 3 years old, and it was a devastating one as i dont have any idea how to handle them, it was my first time being with that age range kids, and to get out of the mess i ask my bishop for a release, well my way of escape to the responsibility that i know i shouldn't have done that.Years later, i am now married have kids on my own and we settle in my husbands place so i have a different ward now, and i am serving as a counselor in the primary organization, and i can say it is really tough serving in the primary, we were a member of the church since i came in this world so i went to primary myself and i saw all the primary workers serving there as a child with their patience and commitment to serve and to teach us sometimes they cried infront of us, once they walked out on us, i still can remember their faces until now we were so hard headed and so immature like kids should be, but still they're there every sundayfor us, magnifying their calls, i commend them and love them for their efforts and sacrifices they did for us years ago... So now, serving in the primary myself i did learned a lot from the children, they are so precious, i know they can be so mean and harsh to us sometimes, but being in that organization makes me become a better person... I know Lissete that this call is for you, we don't know yet the reason behind why you were called there, but there is a purpose in everything..Just magnify your calling and enjoy it as you do it, help is and will be provided for you.. you are not always there, you will be released someday and be given another calling, but the learnings you gained will be yours forever.

I’d never walk out on a class. I’ve been working with children since I was a child. I’ve babysat, worked as a day camp counselor, worked as a preschool activities director for the YMCA, taught catechism as a teen to 1st and 2nd graders, work for PAL as a junior camp counselor, and even ran my own in home child care center, but I’m also getting older and some of those four year olds are runners. Lol I won’t be able to keep up.
