Ugly words - react or not?

I just finished notifying, but it looks like few people are on the site.
A few hours ago I had a confrontation with my parents. As many people know, my father has been shouting all day, uttering ugly words, and sometimes I really can't stand it.
How do you react to ugly words when you get them?

Thankfully I live alone with my granddaughter and although we argue sometimes we don't use ugly words. I remember my parents fighting when I was young and I hated it. I used to stay in my room or go out.

@Nevena83 Yes I was always afraid that my parents would leave us when I was little. I don't think they realise what they do to little ones when they are fighting.

@sprite1950 Many parents do not think about their children. They behave selfishly, but my father enjoys hurting me.

First of all, I don't let ugly words bother me. Secondly, I use humor to either diffuse the situation, or to help me keep calm.

@Nevena83 You really need to figure out a way to get out of that house. Your father is a toxic poison to your emotional and mental health.

@moffittjc You're right, but I don't see a way to go, it will only stop when he or I die.

@Nevena83 I know. But such things never happen in my family.Still if ever someone among my friends unnecessarily shouts at me,I too would not tolerate it.In family I can't even imagine my parents shouting at me or anybody else.

"I shout back!"
This would everyone's tendency when being shouted of bad words.
.
If you're well mannered and raised by a good parents, you won't retaliate by throwing another bad words.

@Nakitakona When I get into a fight with him, he knows exactly how he is going to hurt me and then he slips away and I remain in tears.

@Nevena83 That's a display story and that is too much. If I am in your shoes, I would do something worse and I would be showing disrespect to him. Ignoring him is impossible.

I focus on the positive and the blessings around me instead. The enemy has no place unless we give it to him.

@Nevena83 We absolutely should respect our parents. God gives us free will. If someone does not choose Him He will NOT force them to. Your dad doesn't have Jesus inside his heart if he is being hateful to you.
That is NOT God's fault--that is the enemy doing these things--which is what he does--KILL, STEAL & DESTROY.
If God FORCED your dad to accept Him or to be more like Jesus & less mean then that isn't free will is it?? And then we wouldn't like God because we don't have free will if He forced us to be more like Him....
Poor God, guess He can't win in our eyes can He??

@LovingMyBabies Last year I spoke with a monk and when I told him about my father's behavior, he said it was too late for him and he had chosen the devil. When I told him that when we went to church, he was in a hurry to get out and go home, and he explained to me that he was in a hurry because the devil was waiting for him.

Ugly words hurt us much . They are like a very sharp knife that continue to stab our innermost part. These could affect our emotion and day to day activities. The words we hear seem always flashing in our mind and seem sucking at our ears. If hear ugly words, as I resolved, is to leave the place and look at the surroundings and plug in melodious music to our ears. Your father might have a very ugly experience with his parents when he was young and his anger is thrown back to his own family which is wrong. You need to have a face-to-face talk in a calm way to resolve the conflict in a refined way.

@Nevena83 Giving someone a time-out is to temporarily seperate him/her from a place where an unacceptable behavior has occured. It's what parents do to punish their children. You should have done it to your father...

Last week somebody referred to what we are doing as stupidity. It's hurting, but some people have really this habit of getting on with ugly words.

Usually, I turn and walk away. If they are having that much issue with whatever is going on with them, better to step away. If it is a loved one, or a close friend, I will often attempt to learn what the issue is and ask if there is anything I can do to help them. But there is so much good stuff in life that no one should not have to deal with other people's anger.

@Nevena83 I agree. While my mother was dying, she got more and more unpleasant. The doctors stated this was due to a lack of oxygen getting to her brain. Meaning there was nothing that could be done to help her out of that. The surgery she needed wasn't available for several more years. Today they could have helped her. Oh well. And you are right, it is very hard to sit and listen to that. Harder still not to respond in kind.

Not sure what you mean by ugly words, like someone calling you names or just swear words in general. I swear all the time so if someone else swears it doesn't bother me at all but someone but if you mean calling me names or swearing at me, that is a different story.
