Children and cellphones

I had my first cellphone when i was 18. To be honest i am not even sure when is the best age to have one. I was watching a court show that is in spanish called "caso cerrado". I did not share the link because the show is in spanish. A mother took her babysitter to court because she would babysit her one year old for 8 hours a day. She would give this 1 year old girl a cellphone to play with for the whole 8 hours. She was not watching the child. She was even sleeping with that lady's husband but that's no surprise . So this little girl's thumbs are stiff from holding the cellphone everyday. Her bones are obviously still growing so now she needs medical attention and it's costing the mother money that she doesn't have. Like i said i didn't have a phone until i was 18 and well i don't know now what age is the best. I know that it's good for a teenager so that parents can keep in touch and it's good for emergencies. What are your thoughts? I would say maybe 12 years old. Once they are in middle school. Elementary school kids are more supervised but middle is when they start to be more exposed to things etc. What do you think? I don't know the right answer to this.

That is way too young to have a phone. Nowadays I see much younger kids (even babies) using iPad, iPhones at such a young age. It is not good for them or their eyes. I did not get a phone until middle school. Mainly to communicate with my parents' and friends (when I walked home.) or for an emergency. I did not get unlimited texting until I was out of highschool.

@Ladanger Yes definitely their fingers/hands too. It is so sad to see babies/toddlers/young kids using technology so soon. They should be playing with toys.

That is how it should be. Yeah they mess up their eyes and their fingers. Poor babies.

@infatuatedbby like that baby sitter wasn't taking care of her. She just gave her the phone for 8 hours. They need toys.

@Ladanger I'm using it now - to be honest I'd rather be on my computer, but I 'm currently away from home and trying to keep in touch on this fiddly little thing!

Both my grandkids have cell phones. My granddaughter is 11 and a figure skater. My grandson is 9 and an ice hockey goalie. They need the phones to keep in touch with their parents in the huge ice complexes.

I agree with you on the age. As the child learns more about responsibility and gains more independence, that is an appropriate time to let them have a cell phone. A cell phone is not supposed to be a toy, but in today's world that is how it is now marketed.

@Ladanger Thanks. Cell phone usage by kids is definitely a debatable topic...

Probably at the age of 12 the kid would be allowed to handle the cellphone .

I gave my son a cellphone at the age of 7 but it wasn't a smart phone and it was a basic call and text phone only.

That is really hard to answer. Sometimes we might need to think if it really is a need or a want. I think it is always not necessary for kids to have one all the time but it depends on their age. If they go out by themselves i think they would need to have one in case of emergency but then if parents send them to school and fetch them personally i don't think it is necessary to have one. I could even remember during my high school days that we are not allowed to bring mobile phones to school. It could be hard sometimes because parents might get late in picking me up from school and there is no way for them to let me know about it. So i think it really depends on the situation.

This is why i miss the 90s. I use to even play with dirt outside. Parents make them get distracted with the games on the phone.

Well I didn't get my first one till sometime in my 20's but then again they were not a thing or were not even close to affordable and no one else had them till then. My kids didn't get them till their teen years. but for now I think still they shouldn't have them till they are teens. I'm not sure they need them before then.

@Ladanger Yea, but I think it is a close call on if cell phones have helped us or hurt us as a society.

Can't blame the kids.... times have changed with respect to technology drastically in the last two decades. They are just seeing the adults on the phone and picking it up quickly.
