“I fancy this, I fancy that, I wanna be so flash
I give a little muscle, and I spend a little cash
But all I get is bitter and a nasty little rash”
“Cool, for Cats” has sort of crazy lyrics with a great early new wave sound and named after the UK’s first TV show to present rock and roll performers. Squeeze is a classic new wave alternative band formed in London in 1974 by Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook. Jools Holland was an original member. Name was taken from the Velvet Underground album “Squeeze.”
Far more successful in their native UK, Squeeze scored some US success with “Tempted” and “Black Coffee in Bed.” “Cool for Cats” reached UK #2 while relegated to US alternative radio. From the album of the same name, the song was written by Difford and Tilbrook with Difford taking a rare turn as lead vocalist. Squeeze broke up in 1982, reunited 1985-99 and again in 2017.

I know the band and the song. Cool for cats was the first song I listened to, but I also know some of the other songs like Tempted, Labelled with love and Up the junction.
