Bernie Hit The Nail On The Head

For all of the democrat's proposals for free stuff that will no doubt send the United States right into the toilet, Bernie Sanders sort of put his foot in his own mouth and I don't think he knew he did it. You see, we have this problem of this whole $15 minimum wage thing still floating around. And anyone who understands business, ESPECIALLY small business, and anyone who can think even just a little bit understands fully that it's a disastrous proposal with very harmful consequences. Of course Bernie is just one of the great proponents of this idea. But, it appears the Bernie campaign is not so cash rich, and has limited resources, much like the vast majority of small businesses which would be negatively impacted by a $15 an hour minimum wage, and CANNOT afford to pay his own workers $15 an hour. His workers protested of course. When asked why he could not pay his own workers the same amount of money he was asking every other employer in America to pay was as simple as anyone (again, who can think things through) who has argued AGAINST the wage has said time and time again. "Our campaign does not have the funds to cover the expenses of a $15 wage, and so we would invariably have to let some people go in order to pay those who were left that wage." BINGO! That's what we have been saying since this whole ridiculous idea first came around. Businesses will have to either close their doors, raise prices, or lay people off. Bernie, you win the prize for making solid the argument we who are against the $15 minimum wage have been saying for years.

Good post Jim. A $15 minimum wage would have a domino effect. Good for the workers, yes, but.....

Good for workers until they're replaced by machines.

No. Actually NOT good for the workers. Good for the workers that are LEFT after the fallout. Again, only MAYBE 60% of the workforce would be left in most businesses. If the company has to pay more, it will have to lay people off UNLESS it can raise prices enough that it covers the additional cost of the labor. In most cases a small business will not be able to do this, and in most cases a small business will not be able to raise prices ENOUGH to cover the costs (due to market conditions that will dictate how much you can actually charge for something before you price yourself out of the market). More people working may make the $15. But LESS people will be working MAKING the $15. So, you accomplish nothing.

@TheHorse But that is caused by government policy and regulation and taxes and unions. If the businesses could afford the workers they'd keep the workers instead of waste time investing in machines.

How come the one percent wealth which is comprised almost entirely of liberal millionaires and billionaires aren't footing the bill for Bernie's workers? Wait a minute. Bernie is a millionaire himself. Didn't he say the rich can afford to pay the workers more?

There is actually a theory on the liberal millionaires and bllionaires. They are NOT actually liberals. They simply present themselves as such. They have a lot of money, and if they can convince the little guy they are on THEIR side and looking out for them, it protects them in a way. They say one thing and do another. This is their game. BTW, your last statement made an astute observation. It is something the liberals will NEVER try to provide an answer for, because even THEY know that the truth is the rich CANNOT afford to pay the workers any wage higher than what they can actually afford to pay. Businesses pay what the market demands, and actually wages have increased recently due to major workers shortages—they HAVE to pay more to attract and keep workers. That's the free market doing what it is supposed to do. No need to create an artificial wage. Put in place policy that allows business to grow and flourish and all on its own it will do what it has to do to remain competitive, both in terms of attracting customers as well as attracting a workforce. When the economy is doing well wages go up all on their own all as a result of the stiffer competition in the workforce.

Bernie Sanders is and always has been a fraud from day one, never having worked a day in his life pretty much, and sucking off the government teat the majority of it—all the while complaining about people who actually do things and produce things and create real jobs for people.

We've had pollies shoot themselves in the foot quite often over here too.

It happens more than any pollie would ever care to admit. The funny thing is that a LOT of stuff is on film, and so you can readily call them out when they gaffe or flip-flop.

@porwest Some will use a particular phrase over and over and then the TV station runs them all together. It's pretty funny sometimes.

Excellent discussion Jim! I wouldnt be able to hire any company because their rates would to to expensive, if they have to pay more for labor, we pay more for the service. BUT people don`t get that.

Unfortunately most people don't. When I was a landlord I used it as a very basic example of how money works in the real world. Increase my taxes, the rent goes up to cover the difference. Make my water bill higher, the rent goes up, and the same applies to all other aspects of my ownership. If my repairs cost more, if my cost of ownership goes up, I raise the rent to make up the difference. No matter HOW much you raise my costs, I don't pay the expense. I simply RECOUP my expense. And it's the tenant that pays the difference. Not the owner. Granted, I MAY be somewhat limited by what I can reasonably charge for rent as a whole. But still, the argument is fairly solid in any event.

Raise the minimum wage too much and you run into problems such as you note. You basically trade. The worker makes more money, but now it costs more to buy goods and services.

@porwest This wage increase is also serving to escalate technology replacing workers. It was coming along but this "threat" has caused restaurants to cut out servers for self order table kiosks.

@JohnRoberts Another very astute observation. This is what drove automation even in many of those union jobs. Workers can ask for and GET whatever they ask for. BUT, the business will just go back and figure out a way to reduce their labor costs regardless. A business does not ever PAY costs. It RECOUPS costs. This is something so many people just do not understand.

Exactly. And SOME workers make nothing because they have to be fired to make room for the ones that are left to be paid the higher wage. The sad thing is that this affects small business more than the bigger ones. The bigger ones can SOMEWHAT absorb the costs. But the small business, which makes up better than 75% of all employment in the country get hurt terribly. When you impact the stability of employers who make up 75% of the workforce's employers...A LOT OF PEOPLE WILL LOSE THEIR JOBS AS A RESULT. It seems funny to me that liberals don't realize that they are actually helping those big businesses they supposedly hate so much to destroy the mom and pops which are the lifeblood of the U.S. economy... ...that they supposedly care so much about. But this is part of the "plan," or the agenda of the left really. They NEED people to need them for all of their free stuff and programs. If they can keep you down, if they can keep you unemployed, you will seek out their help for all of the stuff they can give you... ...and they maintain their power and control over you and your life. They can essentially become dictators when they seek to feed you, clothe you, house you, and take care of your health care needs.

Live and learn. It's kind of insulting to me that a kid with a D average in high school can make almost what I make with a Ph.D. is psychology, simply because I chose to work in social services...so the next generation of kids won't have to work at McDonalds for $10/hour for more than a couple of years (while they go to community college in search of the skills necessary for a "real" job).

Sorry to hear that. Serbia's economic woes are a part of a very different problem than we have here in the U.S.

Our labor sector in the society is asking for a hike in the minimum wage of the worker. Our government takes no action. She becomes mute and deaf. Probably the reason is no sufficient money to meet the demand of the workers.
