Nowadays, there is huge competition between the incumbents and new companies vying for a slice of the market. It is very normal that employees have to work overtime, especially in internet industry.Did you hear about “996.icu project”? This is a joke made by Chinese programmers,it means they are working 6 days a week from 9am to 9pm and not far away some day they would live in ICU.Most of the big companies’ employees will get their overtime pay,but it’s hard to tell in small companies.
Ken, a friend of my GF, who as a programmer for 4 years, now he wanna find a new job which can offer higher salary. He got an interview a week before, the interviewer was contented with the interviewee's work experience,it looked they had a nice talking. However, when the interviewer ask,”Are you willing to work overtime if necessary for the progress of the project?” Ken answered,”yes, but I wanna know the extra wage.”
“If you have to work overtime because of your productivity, are you willing to work overtime for free?”
“If the project is delayed due to my personal reasons, I will voluntarily work overtime. However, the company should make reasonable plans and have clear and reasonable progress standards.”
One week passed,Ken did not receive any offer. I asked Ken,”Are you willing to work overtime for free?”,he answered,”Well,I’m gonna work for you for free.” I laughed,”you must be kidding me.” he said,”you are kidding me first.”

Here in the US as far as I know those who work on a yearly salary do not get paid for overtime. I wouldn't mind if I occasionally had to do that but if this was a regular thing no way.

@lin0775 Yeah. Not only is it exhausting but people want to get compensated for their time.

Hahaha..this was good one, but it gave serious insight into smaller companies that have no process in place for overtime work.
You cant keep employee work overtime in the name of productivity and project requirement and if that is the case, there has to remuneration for that, and that too after employee consent.
Sometimes, we cant just take things for granted.

I believe the company and employees should feel each other as a person and care for one another that way can it benefit both. It's true a company must plan ahead and not overburden the employees but the employees should also be flexible and ready to help out in difficult times

Ken's response seems perfectly reasonable to me. I think the idea of a 12 hour day for 6 days a week is ridiculous. The rest of the world is looking for a better work-life balance while China, apparently, wants everyone to have no free time. Because, honestly, after such a long working week, you're just going to want to sleep on your day off.
Like Ken, I wouldn't mind working a little over-time for free if it was my fault that the extra work was needed. Otherwise, I think I work hard enough and am glad to get home to my family at the end of the working day. They come first. A lot of jobs around here say they offer flexibility but the truth is that they want employees to be flexible without any mutuality.

it would have to be something i really, really enjoyed-like say working with animals.
otherwise,no way.if companies can get something free out of you, they usually abuse it at some point.
