Do You Use An Air Conditioner?

I just read the discussion from @NJChicaa about the shock of how much the power bills soars when using an a/c. I live in the deep south and its hot! We always have extreme humidity, except in maybe January then its low. I was not raised with the luxury of having a/c, we had fans and all the windows in the house open but that was common unless you were wealthy. We stayed outside a lot as kids, on the swing set, the above the ground pool, the water hose out front when the grass needed watered. Riding bikes, climbing trees and playing house. But we all sweated, it was hot. I got a/c full time about 10 years ago, before then I had a window unit in my bedroom so I could sleep better, that is when I realized the cost of comfort. I was addicted! Although I love the hot summer and outside, I enjoy coming home and relaxing in a cool house. I reckon its age. I give up something for that comfort, to have the money to pay for it. Now I don`t miss whatever it was I gave up but I do enjoy sleeping in a cool house. Yes my power bill can be up to $300 for August and as low as $100 for November. How about you, got a/c?

@marlina Design of the house matters a lot I noticed. We have Air conditioners in 3 rooms. The drawing room air conditioner is left on as most of the time, we are there in summers, and single AC is on. But there is no door that blocks the air from escaping to dining and kitchen. This reduces effectiveness, and we have to keep it at lower temperatures for longer. At 43 C I think it is justified. When I was younger, we had two floors above us, so the heat didn't feel as oppressive. I have also been to courts..and the walls are high with ventilators. Fans suffice despite many of us sitting in the same room.

It's rarely very hot in Germany. I don't know anybody who has air conditioning. Many years ago we had an extremely hot summer. We live in an old house with a very deep basement which always remains cool. The family living on the ground floor carried their TV set into the basement and we all sat on the stairs leading down watching TV. That was fun.

When it's working we do! Lol. I realized the last week how much we depend on the comfort of having AC.95 degrees INSIDE was unbearable. I would rather be comfortable and pay a little more than be uncomfortable & sweating to be honest. Our bill went from $150-$300 when the AC was going out-we didn't realize that was the cause of the bill increase though til it went out. And we have a small 2 bedroom!

I do not do well in the heat. We have always had a/c in all of the homes that we've lived in during our married years. At home, on the farm, we did not have a/c while I was living there, now that my brother and his wife live in the home that I was raised in, they have central a/c which was installed when they put in a new furnace. I can't even go without a/c in my car, I blame it on my thick blood-its great for cold winter days, but it makes me weak in the heat.

@andriaperry I like the cold, just not when the windchills get to anything past about 20C, then it hurts my lungs.

Nope. Only well-todo family and the rich could afford to have a/c in their house. We're only using a stand fan and desk fan to cool off us when the weather is hot.

We have to use air conditioner in summer because it is very hot here. Sometimes we will also uses it in winter when it is very cold because we don't have the heating system indoor.

@andriaperry It can get up to 40-45 degrees Celsius. Or 104-113 degrees Fahrenheit. It's not often that it gets that warm, but it has gotten to 40C/104F.

I do not have AC. I have two giant fans. One is near my desk and the other is on a little table in my room. I can't pay the huge electric bill. I am paying for internet and wifi and helping my son with his bills.

Only e/f or electric fan Cannot afford yet the high cost of electricity of air-conditioner, also the high cost of the a/c itself.

There are some things I will nickle and dime. But when it comes to AC its not one of them. I do not like running it, but that's only because I hate having the house closed all the time. BUT, I don't care how much it costs ultimately, within reason, but I am not sweating my balls off to save a few bucks—and that's saying something considering the tightwad to the extreme you know me to be.

Hotdamn, $300 is way toooo high. I've paid $50 for my electric bill and $45 for the water bill this summer, that's expensive to me but a heck of a lot cheaper then what you pay.

We wouldn’t want to freeze in our house in the winter and wouldn’t want to roast in the summer. Our a/c has been on constantly except for two cooler nights. Our bill was just under $600 last month.

Right now we live in a mobile home park so we use ceiling fans and a window unit. I know what the comfort of central air is and I know the bane of a hot house as well. However what I love here is that after it rains our home is always cool in every room. Nothing quite like that
