Hi, I have lost lots and still have a hard time knowing what to say when someone has lost something. There is a something that is said in Hebrew and I for the life of me have a hard time saying it or remembering what to say.
Losing someone or your furry ones is very hard on people, especially if they were very close to the person.
Do any of you have a hard time telling someone how sorry you are for their loss?

Yes I have to be careful too. My friend brother was murdered, and I just said sorry for your loss. His reply he did t misplace anything. A few people don’t like to hear sorry for your loss.

Why don't they like people to say sorry for your loss?

@CookieMonster46
So what would they like you to say instead of that?

I always know that whatever I say it will not provide the comfort and empathy that I wish to convey. Words just don't cut it in some circumstances.

That is the controversy. It's like it shouldn;t happen,so there's almost no right thing to say.

This is a big huggy country where they will hug you but now not so much and they will shy away a lot too now I think it just another way of being that´s all not that they don´t feel for you.
It all depends with me how the saying sorry for their loss comes out and sometimes I usually just touch their arm very lightly and the rest comes from the heart.
There again a lot of people don´t want you to even touch them so it makes it a bit difficult to know how to say what you are trying to say.

I guess its always been difficult but now much even more so for some reason and with people you know its a bit more easier than with people you don´t really know.

It is very difficult to know what to say to someone in so much pain and grieving.

I have experienced that when our favorite cat Garkitty was poisoned by a heartless, unknown neighbor. We're all affected in the family.

That is horrible. I hate when animals are mistreated. I am so so sorry.

@Hannihar The worse thing was Garkitty's maltreatment. He's shot by an improvised sharp pointed rod that went through from his left front leg to his left shoulder. He survived after his deep wound was treated by our third elder daughter. But the second try was poison and he didn't survive.

I think that a big hug is worth all the words in the world.

You are right but there are some you cannot give a hug to. I will give an example. In Judaism a woman cannot hug a religious man that is not her husband. It is not allowed in Orthodox Judaism. A woman can embrace another woman but not a man.

Women are not suppose to touch anyone other than their husbands. That cannot be done either.

I’m a weird one and loss doesn’t bother me. But the best thing you can usually say is sorry for your loss or some variation of that.

I’ve been that way since I was 4. Even though loss doesn’t bother me as it concerns my family. It doesn’t mean I’m completely heart less when it comes to my friends or people I consider as extended family.
And also I’ve known people who are insulted when you use the sorry for your loss phrase because they think the person is being contrite without actually meaning it.
Which is completely unfair, and an extremely rude thing to do. But it happens.

Usually just that is comforting..saying something is usually better than nothing, or sometimes just a hug is good.
