My beloved little dog got killed

I don’t know if any of you know, but in April of last year, one of my dogs passed away from illness. I got another dog a few days later, and now he is gone. He was a digger, so therefore, he would find ways to get out of the fenced backyard.. once I realized he got out again, for the thousandth time, I went looking for him. I took his harness and leash with me, so that I could put them on him once I caught him.He was a very hard dog to catch as he would run up to me, and I would try to grab him, and he would run off.I decided this time to let him just follow me back home, and he did for a bit, and then all of a sudden he ran into the busy road, and got hit by s car. He was killed instantly. The hardest part was I was there and saw it happen. I can’t seem to get the image out of my head of him getting hit. I think it will haunt me for awhile. I have a tendency to blame myself, as I didn’t close the hole he made under the fence, as I didn’t know where it was. I finally found it and plugged it up, and then he gets killed shortly thereafter. I only had him around 16 months, and I dealt with him getting out quite a bit. I was hoping he would stop, so I asked the Lord to stop him from getting out again. I got my answer and it wasn’t the answer I wanted or hoped for, but an answer nonetheless. I am here to tell you to cherish your pets, as you never know when it might be their last day. I will miss him but I also realize that life doesn’t always go the way we want or expect it too. My life is better having him in it even for the short time he was mine.

@Marilynda1225 I hope so too as it plays over and over in my head, like a loop. I know that it will become easier over time, but that being said, I will never forget him. He was funny in what he did like howling, and I can still hear him howl like a coyote. I still don’t understand why he chose to go on the road, as I never thought he would. He just didn’t recognize the danger in crossing the road in oncoming traffic. I will always miss him, that is for sure.

@rosekiss losing a pet is always difficult but in these circumstances it's even worse. I hope you can get past the image of him being killed and remember all the loving memories you had.

They are like family and it is like losing a loved one, although I can’t replace my loved ones, I can replace my pets. It doesn’t mean their deaths weren’t sad as they were and I still think about them a lot.

@CarolDM He was also a rescue and I miss him terribly. I probably will fir quite some time. Life certainly isn’t fair, but we must go on in spite of it.

@rosekiss Yes indeed they are family. I lost a 14 y/o cocker right after losing my son, broke my heart all over again. Then lost my 24 y/o cat that was my son's cat. So hard. Life can be unfair. I rescued two cats and they are my babies for now.

It was very traumatic, as I just froze, but was able to scream and cry. I don’t understand why the person that hit him, never stopped, unless they didn’t realize they hit him. The sound of the car hitting him was so loud, that it brought people out of their houses, as it sounded like two cars hitting. You would have thought that the driver would have stopped, as I kept yelling that he hit my dog, but nothing. That is the most devastating part of it, I will never get an apology. It would have started the healing process that much faster. It is what it is though, and life goes on , and so must I. I won’t ever forget him though.

I am so sorry. I understand how you feel. This also happened to me. My dog was hit by a car and after many years I can't overcome this. Now I have another dog and I keep him in a closed space. He also wants to get out. It was a lesson learned. I am sorry for my dog, but I don't want him to have the same fate as the other one.

I can certainly understand that one. If only he had t beenn so adventurous and would dig his way out, he would be alive today. I did realize though, that it would happen eventually. I was hoping it wouldn’t, but I figured it would, and I was right. What a way to die.
