Emergency Room Visit

Yesterday my husband had a cancerous spot removed from his face. They had to go quite deep; and it left quite a large hole on his face. He had told them that he was on blood thinners; but they didn't have him stop them in advance of the surgery. They cauterized another suspicious spot on his face as well. In the evening he began to bleed from the surgical wound. In spite of applying pressure several times, the bleeding would not stop. So, at 12:30 am we were off to the Emergency Room. I've only driven about a 1/2 dozen times in the past 10 years and never at night; so this was an adventure for me. Fortunately there was no traffic. They could not stop the bleeding at the ER; so eventually they ended up putting in four stitches. It kept bleeding; but the doctor put in a "blanket stitch" which finally stopped the bleeding. We got home around 3:30 am. My husband now has a black eye; but he's OK otherwise. That was our excitement for this morning! :-D Have you ever been to the Emergency Room? Photo Credit: Pixabay

That had to be terrifying! I've had to be to the ER quite a few times, both for myself and for family members. I am relieved that your husband's bleeding was finally stopped- now he can tell all his friends that you got mad at him and hit him with a pancake turner and that's how he got his black eye. The one trip that scared the daylights out of me was when we went to Disneyland with my husband's daughter. Suddenly he came out of the bathroom holding his male member, bleeding from it. We bundled him into the car and raced for the ER (fortunately I wasn't driving we would still be looking for it!). We were there for three hours while they ran tests. It turned out that he had a kidney infection and he was on antibiotics for the rest of the trip. The bleeding stopped as soon as we got to the ER. After he got some sleep he felt much better and the trip went on as planned. I also had to follow the ambulance into the hospital when my Mom was unresponsive. I couldn't wake her and I knew something serious was wrong. I hadn't driven her van much and it was nerve wracking to drive behind it to the hospital. I drove it every day until I lost her to pneumonia. She had the van just for her beloved Rottweilers. Mom and I don't spoil our animals...I can see her in heaven surrounded by all her spoiled critters and all the others that are joining the group each day. I am so thankful your husband is okay and that they stopped the bleeding. I am sorry that he has a black eye, but it could have been much worse...is he on blood thinners? It seems kind of strange that the stitches didn't stop the bleeding right off.

Oh, my goodness that Disneyland ER trip would have been frightening. I'm so sorry to hear about your Mom. Yes, my husband is on blood thinners; and they told him he didn't have to stop them before the surgery. :-(

@LindaOHio Someone wasn't paying attention to their teachings. If they were going deep into your husband's face to get at the cancerous tumors he shouldn't have taken his blood thinners that day. It's a wonder he didn't bleed out! It's very easy for someone on blood thinners to start bleeding seriously from a small wound. And to remove a tumor and NOT stitch the wound is as dumb as trying to teach a pig to ice dance. A small scab will cover the wound but it's very easy for the scab to come off with any movement and the incision will start bleeding seriously. I speak from experience with my father and his being on blood thinners. He would cut himself and we would go half crazy trying to get the bleeding to stop. The really fun one was when he set the mobile home on his hand. It was a 10' x 57' unit and he was leveling it and he reached over and turned the jack so it would go down and the mobile home came down on the wood on his hand. We had to bundle him up and take him to the ER. Fortunately there were no broken bones...Just a lot of squished fingers and time spent with them in ice and then their being wrapped in gauze to heal. But blood thinners are something that you don't mess with. If you haven't researched them, you might want to. Another thing, when they put him on blood thinners did they tell your husband that he isn't to take aspirin? There are quite a few things he isn't supposed to take. Also if he doesn't have one you might consider one, get him a medic alert bracelet for his being on blood thinners and the reason why he's on blood thinners. It could save his life if you aren't with him. That's the first thing we did with father when he had his open heart surgery and we kept them on him (we put about 20 on him through the years, he kept loosing them).

@BearArtistLady We both felt that he should be off blood thinners before the surgery. We should have known better. And you're right about the stitches! Thanks for the tip about the medic alert bracelet. It could save his life. Thanks for commenting.

Oh my goodness, how is it that no one told him to stop blood thinner for at least 3 days before surgery? Yes, I went to the ER a few times, one time during the night.

Oh, my! I'm so sorry your hubs had to go through all of that. They really should have stopped his use of blood thinners. My husband and I went to the dermatologist on Tuesday. The doctor removed something suspicious looking from the bridge of my husband's nose for a biopsy. My son broke his arm years ago and off to the emergency room we went. Hope your husband heals quickly.

@LindaOHio Glad he's doing better. The black eye will take a while to clear from black to green to yellow. Been there, done that many times.

Blood thinners are used for better circulation but one must be careful as any cut can bleed profusely. I wish your husband a speedy recovery.

It's a little more complicated stitch. It's the one that finally stopped the bleeding.
