The San Francisco Board of Supervisors has called for the use on new terminology for those who have gone to jail for breaking the law.
Convicted criminals are now justice-involved persons.
Those who are released after their sentence is over are a formerly incarcerated person, a justice-involved person or just a returning resident.
Juvenile delinquents are to be referred to as young person with justice system involvement or a young person impacted by the juvenile justice system.
The new names are not binding.

Is there really a need to make things more complicated with regards to this matter?

They don't want criminals to have to bear the stigma of being criminals.
