Usually starting a family requires a lot of financial support. But raise in pay happens only after so many years of working. In retirement age, less money may be required to subsist since children are already grown up. It will make more sense if employers pay more during the time when it is needed the most: when people are young and having small children. In other words, pay decreases instead of pay increases as people gets older. Adopted as a general rule, I can see that there can be a lot of exceptions to this very unconventional way.
