Word of Mouth Working

I completed a special order gavel set during the week. The friend who ordered it received it today and was absolutely delighted. A mutual friend was with her at the time and now I have another order for another gavel set. I hadn't been planning on making these in quantity but I better get used to the idea. She says it will be seen by people from a lot of other clubs that use gavels in their meetings. Who knew these would be popular? I am proud of it. I harvested the wood overhanging a neighbour's driveway. Black Cherry is so rich in colour and the grain is beautiful. I did a video of it although I never videotaped much of the turning process.
This set was turned as a special order for a friend who requested it and offered payment. The wood was initially harvested with a chainsaw and you can watch ...

That is sweet, I hope you get more orders or get some kind of contract. I do not have much need for them but is very pretty and very useful for the ones like judges in a highly respected positions.

Most of the ones I've seen for sale online are done on big repeating lathes. They come in cheaper than I can afford to make but if someone is willing to pay for hand turned I'm game. I just hadn't thought there was this much of a market for them. I've gotten a couple of requests for wood mortar and pestles but I don't have easy access to a wood that is hard enough. Probably have to get carbide insert tools to do them as well. Might end up being worth the expense.

@koopharper Rich people crazy and you clearly have a talent look into it especially because like you said you are original and rich people like that much use or not they like to look at things that are pretty and serves no purpose for them. I hate that mindset but nothing wrong with adapting to your surroundings. Food for thought anyway. Like Street dogs can move onto something more purposeful when get the money.

Oh wow. Excellent job there. Woodworkers are really talented. Have you tried doing Etsy?

@koopharper You just have to find your niche and excel in it. Lots of people do great in Etsy if they gather enough good reviews. Can be very demanding though, so good luck!

@inkyuboz I know if I work hard I might make some money there. I just have to be better prepared and positioned the next time I put stuff there.

Thanks. I tried Etsy a very long time ago and didn't have any luck. I've learned a lot since then and I'm likely to give it a shot in the future.

This is really lovely and congratulations on getting another order for one. Vince won two gavels when he was in a public speaking club. I guess someone made them at some stage.

They are far more popular than I expected. This set is going to be shown off to a lot of people. We'll see what all comes of it.
