Did you know that there are wild lovebirds in the United States?

My friend Paula sent me this picture from Scottsdale Arizona, where she lives. It is one of a pair of lovebirds that visit her periodically. I had just been chatting with some lovebirds at the local pet store, but they did not tell me that they had cousins flying around in the wild. I'll have to do a little research and see if they're native to the Southwest, escapees whose babies will not survive in the wild, or descendants of escapees who now breed and live in the wild there. I wouldn't mind seeing something so pretty on my balcony. (No disrespect to my doves or other birds implied.)

They are native to Africa, I know there were wild lovebirds in the south of Italy. Those little birds are lovely and affectionate, they are pretty.

@TheHorse They are curious, one escaped the house of one of my neighbor and it came to me when I went outside and offered him a cookie.

@LadyDuck Did it accept the cookie and continue returning?

They seem curious and unafraid when I visit them at the pet store.

I read below and see they are native to Africa. They are quite popular cage-birds here.

But I've heard that they don't bond with humans quite as much as parakeets and other parrots.

@JudyEv I had one as a kid. He was my best buddy and used to sit on my shoulder while I studied.

@TheHorse I don't really know. Budgies (parakeets) seem to bond well.

Are they related to parrots? So beautiful.

pretty bird. All I get is cardinals, doves, and other small birds. I saw a huge goose about a week ago. Lily (my cat) loves looking at the birds at the feeder. She was making a hissing sound a few days ago at a dove and my mother didn't know what the sound was. She never heard Lily hiss at the birds.

I wonder why she'd hiss. I'd think she'd practice her stalking.

They are probably descendents of escapees

I checked--you're right. Apparently they love the Phoenix area (similar climate to their native West Africa), and there were two major incidents that "set them free" in the 1980s or so.

@TheHorse there are all sorts of wild parrot colonies across the US due to escapees. They even thrive in NYC which gets COLD in the winter!

@NJChicaa I'm pretty sure there's one in San Francisco. I wonder how they survive NY Winters!

Florida has a lot of parrots, macaws and other tropical birds living in the wild. Probably as a result of migration up from Caribbean or South American countries, and also probably because some have escaped or were released out into the wild. However they got there, they seem to be thriving pretty well in Florida's tropical environment.

Awesome picture. I have seen parakeets around the old lakes in the woods before in summer. I can bet someone turned them loose.
