Looking Into Air TV

We are tired of paying so much money every month for the pleasure of having TV shows to watch. It would be so bad if there was actually something on there that we would like to watch.
So we have been looking into getting an antenna of some type. Be it indoor or outdoors, matters none to us as long as we get some stations. I won't mind as much having a whole lot of nothing to watch if I am not paying to do so every month.
The problem we are having is that everybody is saying theirs is the best and they get more stations than the rest. It's enough to make your head spin.
I would love to know before I buy a system what channels they do get. It only seems fair to me. I don't want to buy one that promises 100 channels and find out I can only get 6.
Has anyone else been checking out antennas of any kind? Does anyone out there in myLotland know which are better than the others? I hope so.

@myklj999 and @Bensen32 are right. You need to do a little research on over the air antenna's before getting one for your area. Like @rebelann can't pick anything up because of the mountains we are blocked from getting the ABC channel, probably because of our mountains, but get the others channels great. We don't miss ABC at all, never watched it much anyway.
We bought a ROKU over 3 years ago and a digital over the air antenna from Amazon ($12-14), and have been so happy with the change. We only subscribe to SLINGTV which is enough for us, and pay about $25/month plus taxes. You have to be careful because if you get a lot of paying streaming channels you can end up paying like you do with cable/satellite. I wouldn't go back to cable/satellite now.
Hope this helps. Good luck in your research.

I use Amazon prime most of the time for my streaming needs and once in a while I will add an extra channel if there's a show I want to watch. I don't pay more than $25 a month when I add in an extra channel but with Amazon prime I have the yearly subscription which is about $119 for the year. Right now I have CBS All Access which has a show I wanted to see for an extra charge of $9.99 before taxes.

the number 'f channels ya get depends'n yer location versus the location 'f the stations towers. here we've jest a simple, less'n $20 'ndoor antenna. we get 4 pbs stations (one's fx with native culture), 1 nbc channel out'ta albuquerque, thistv (older movies), metv ('lso older shows - andy griffith, perry mason, lots 'f the ol' westerns), 2 cbs channels (one from amarillo, the other from albuquerque, makes 't nice coz 'f the 1 hr diff'erence) 'n fox. there'd be a spanish 'n religion channel, too, but we don't watch those. do miss abc, but that'd be life. could get 't if'n we'd'n outdoor antenna. near larger cities, ya can pick'p lots more stations.
here's a map thingy that'cha can plug yer zip code 'nto which gives ya'n idea 'f what channels ya can get. lists 'nly 4 fer us, silly thingy, lol.

@HazySue yer welcome :) yes ma'am, knowin' more 'bout what'cha can get can save ya some funds. we've talked 'bout gettin' an outdoor antenna fer some years, possibly get abc back 'n some others (that disappeared when all went digital). jest not certain the $200+ 'd be worth 't o'er the long run.

I understand. I had cable here and they used to show the same shows over and over again and when the picture acted up and the technicians came they did not do anything or listen to me and when Netflix came here I closed the other out and got Netflix.

I had that here and when there was a problem it never got fixed and they would send technicians that did not do anything and would exchange the box for the cable and that is all and never fix the problem. They would show the same things over and over again. There was another cable and did not have the programs I wanted so hoped something would happen so I could say goodbye to that cable and it finally did. We have Netflix and there is so much to watch and it is cheaper than what I had and I love it.

Most people don't know there is a lot to picking the right antenna for your area. Here are a few things to look into before you go buying one based on someones suggestion.
First you need to know what channels are available in your area. You can check this out at either TVFool.com or AntennaWeb.org. These will let you know what channels area available at your address and the strength of the signal and if they are UHF or VHF.
Once you have this information you need to find a HDTV antenna that will give you that strength to get those channels.
As for indoor or outdoor antenna, TVFool.com will tell you the likely hood of an indoor antenna working or not.
Hope this helps a little.

@HazySue Oh I know you love the Nascar races. Is this any good Susan?
NASCAR is one of the most exciting competitions in motorsports. You may be wondering if it's possible to watch NASCAR without cable. In this article, we'll discuss your top 6 options.

We have an antenna that we get 16 stations on but the hubby has not put it on top of the house yet. It is leaning against the house. Hopefully we will find a way of getting NASCAR races somehow or we will be paying for cable for a while.

@TiarasOceanView My hubby loves NASCAR. I appreciate the link you provided. I looked at it and everything involves money. I guess whatever we did will end up costing us.

We have a window antenna and it depends on which way the wind blows, but we always get at least a dozen channels and have plenty to watch. We also have a Roku on one of our televisions.

I had thought about doing this, but I live near a mountain so I wouldn't really get a signal of local tv.

I would use Roku, Fire or a smart TV if I was looking for something new.

I would look into seeing how many FTA channels are in your broadcasting area before getting any equipment.
When we used to live out in the country, there were a lot of FTA channels that we could get from the Detroit viewing area, but as it turns out, they were aware of how far their signal reached, and they would turn it down during peak hours. We eventually purchased a satellite dish and paid for that service.
Where we currently live there are about 3 FTA channels, and 1 of those is in Cantonese, so we cannot watch that.
