Where do I put all of these shoes and other woes of finding space for things in a small house

Yeah, I've got a dilemma. Started organizing, well trying to organize the space that we are living in. Cleaned the living room and found shoes that I had forgotten I had. They were not noticeable in the hidey spot I had them in. But, clean out the hidey spot, drag the shoes into the middle of the room, and you realize you may have a shoe fetish. I have started a box for Goodwill of the items I can now live without, which include shoes that hurt my feet or that Little Miss has outgrown. I need another box!! So, after taking a short break and having a cup of ambition, I'll finish up the task. Only have an hour before I pick up Little Miss at daycare so I best get a move on. We clearly need a larger home. The waiting game is real.

Maybe you don't need more space. You might need less stuff. I have been purging and getting rid of things for years. I think I am getting my space back. I have had several different people here in the past and they all left stuff that I am still finding.

I am slowly weeding things out. Today I’m hitting the kitchen cupboards and going to get rid of a bunch of pots and pans that I really have an abundance of. I will keep a few of the pots and pans for when I cook big meals. You always need extra pans.

@akalinus I refuse to get rid of any of my cast-iron I love the stuff. But I do have a lot of baking things that I can get rid of and just a few of the pots and pans. I’ve been holding onto them thinking that my kids could probably use them but I’d rather get rid of them. There will come a time that I could buy new for them if necessary.

@ElusiveButterfly Yes, keep your cast iron stuff. You can cook on a fire with those in case of an emergency, like a natural disaster with no utilities on. I am still weeding out things also.

I have found that the things you accumulate grow to fit the space you have so even a large house soon becomes overcrowded!! I bought over the door shoe holders and that does help to some extent.

Those over the door devices seem to be what everyone is suggesting. I am going online to see what is available. Need to watch my pennies these days.

@BelleStarr I went a little cheaper and bought 2 that were $7 each. I don't have the extra to spend at the moment. I won't be able to put hubby's shoes in them because he drags in mud and other yuck with his shoes. His boots have steel toes and are very heavy. I will just put those on a boot mat behind a chair.

I sure know the feeling. I don't know half of what I have any more. Every time I move it's to a smaller place. Too small now for sure. Things in boxes are piled to the ceiling in the garage. No place to sort them and no one able or with time to do so. Hope you are able to get a larger house soon. We rent so larger would probably mean more money then we have

I am slowly eliminating unwanted/used items. Better to do with less. If I find I need something later on, I'll buy it.

I know what you mean, we have never had a home large enough not to notice the excessive amount of shoes that I own. But, there are lots of innovative places to store them today. Stand up shoe closets, over the door hangers for multiple pairs of shoes, huge wicker baskets with lids, entrance way ottomans that conceal our shoes under their lid.

I wish I had enough space to put Ottomans and storage units such as that. Unfortunately we are really cramped for space. But I am going to get a couple of the over the door hangers so that I can hang the shoes in that.

@ElusiveButterfly Those over the door storage items are great. I have one on the laundry room door, it has shelves, so I can keep canned goods in it, and it holds quite a bit. I have a towel rack that goes over the door in the bathroom, love that thing.

We live in a small town and there is no woman shelter here. We do have a homeless shelter and they at one time would take household items and store them for people and give them out once they were able to find a home. They no longer do that.

@crazyhorseladycx I often ask friends if they know anyone in need of certain things. I'd rather they go to people who can actually use them.

@ElusiveButterfly i reckon that can be viewed 's a good thingy, that not havin' a women's shelter? hopefully there'd be no need? there'd be several places here fer the homeless where's they used to do the same. most 'lso quit takin' items, which i don't blame 'em. some folks'd drop off some purty nasty schtuff :( e'en the women's shelter here 'tis 'lways shocked when i take thingies'n. the last time 'twas a bunch 'f jeans (folks'd given 'em to me fer makin' rag quilts - they looked brand new!) 'n such 'twas freshly washed. when there'd be work clothes (dresses, shirts'n the like), i 'lways wash, iron 'n keep'n a hanger. 'tis not like they've facilities there, nor the time to wash/care fer these items. the same goes with other household items. folks taken broken/chipped dishes (bacteria breedin' grounds), nasty toasters 'n items needin' much repair.

Im in the same spot as you it seems, it can be hard work too! I make more of a mess while doing it then I started out with. We are going to throw a big yard sale next year so all is going into the room we have decided is storage for now. However I have thrown a lot out without hubby knowing. lol Now to decide what else I can get rid of. We are in the middle of redoing rooms too so that makes a mess. It has to end sometime thou right? lol

I see some people that use shoe organizers or other things with pockets to hang them on a closet door. Maybe something like that would work.

I am going to look online to see what is available. Don't want to go near the stores on the first of the month! They are a madhouse!

I always wanted one of those foot stools that opens, so I could shove some of our extra crud in it and nobody would know. Good luck

Clearing your house of things you don't need or want could make a big difference. Have you seen those shoe holders that hang on the backs of doors? Would something like that help?

I was just thinking that those shoe holder to be ideal. Little Miss might have a problem with putting stuff above her Arm length. But The upper ones could hold toys that she really doesn’t play with regular season for display great idea!

I am thinking of moving into a smaller house, so I have began the "get rid of half" this year. Now I got another problem, this furniture is to big for a smaller space, I might have to sell it..... big sigh. Good luck with the clean up and take out.

Furniture we have now is really too big for the space we have. We have two oversize recliner’s that we use for our own comfort. We only have one rocker chair that is upholstered and it’s quite comfortable. But space wise we haveto put anything
