Have you ever paid attention to the registration number plates of Motor Vehicles? In India we have six types of number plates depending upon the use of the Vehicle (not included the Defense Vehicles) 1. Black plate with yellow numbers is used for self-driven rental vehicles. 2. Blue number plate is used for the Embassy vehicles. 3. White number plate with black numbers is used for personal vehicles. 4. Yellow plate is used for commercial vehicles. 5. Red Board with White writing is a temporary number for a brand new Vehicle. 6. Green plate with white letters is used for Electric Vehicles. Do you have such different number plates for registering the Vehicles in your Country depending upon the use? Do you have any idea about them?

The Swiss plates are all of the same color, the Letter M is for Military Vehicles, U transitory plates, V for rental cars and Z for imported vehicles that are not yet been registered through Swiss custom.

That looks quite simple way of classifying the number plates. May be the number of vehicles are less there in Switzerland?

@LadyDuck , Yes, it is because of the little population you could have such a simplified number plate system!

@AKRao24 Well, there are only 8 million people in Switzerland, we keep our plate when we buy a new car. Swiss car number plates consist of a two letter code for the canton followed by up to 6 numerical digits. For Canton Ticino is TI followed by up to 6 numbers, Canton Vaud VD followed by the numbers and so on.

@JudyEv , Yes, in India also we call such 'Personalized numbers as VIP numbers which are generally single digit ones. But the design and the color pattern remains same!

@AKRao24 'Ordinary' number-plates can be different colours. Some government cars have a particular colour or particular numbering. We can buy 'personalised plates' if we want to, too.
