How can kids play video games for hours on end without going bonkers?

I am babysitting my nephews today and they've been playing video games for hours. Fortnite to be exact. And I wasn't able to get them off until now. Except now that the video game is off they are watching Fortnite videos, which are very loud. I told them to put away their phones and give themselves a rest. Their reply was: Well, what are we supposed to do then?
I am thinking...
How about reading a book?
Doing some puzzles?
Building a LEGO?
Doing stuff for school?
Playing boards games?
Playing sports outside?
You can't just play video games and watch video game videos for hours on end. I don't get how kids do that without going crazy or losing their mind.

I am sort of addicted to danishes and things like that. Though to say no to that. Really tough! Sometimes I get upset when I want something like that but there is nothing in the house.

This is true being here for hours everyday. We don't realize it can be an addiction. Good point.

@lovebuglena instead of being on a video games all day they are on mylot. If made $10 this month and some made $20. They probably spend hours on here.

My son used to love Fortnite and he plays every day for long hours, but he eventually got fed up with the game. Maybe because he just got older. And by the way, he plays like a Pro??

I don’t think they play this game anymore. At least I haven’t heard about it from them.

One reason we don't allow video games in my home. =) Too easy to be addicted and nothing else gets to be experienced.

@lovebuglena We play board games here, card games, have outside time, church, family time, school work, etc... There really isn't much time for that mess.

A little can't hurt. Just gotta limit their time on it.

Good for you! Video games serve no positive purpose whatsoever in the big picture.

It's like they are hypnotized and mesmerized by them.

The one good thing about them playing those games for hours is that they are busy and don't bother you or misbehave.

Yeah. Wonder what we did back in the day when those things did not exist.

@LindaOHio Wow! I remember seeing this on TV but it probably happens in real life ... when people are at the dinner table but instead of talking to each other face to face they are chatting via text message. At least the younger generation...

@lovebuglena We used our imagination and went outside and PLAYED! We were in Outback on Thursday and one table of 3 adults and 3 children were ALL on either their phones or game computers.

Video games just have kids enthralled..All those other things are cool things to do though. I would make sure my child did some of them..or just plain old go outside and have fun.

Nothing wrong with playing some video games, just in moderation. There are many other ways to enjoy yourself and have fun.

@lovebuglena I think they will but you have to entertain them on what to do

I wonder if we say something like "if you get off the game I will give you twenty bucks" if they will stop playing.

Those video games can be very addicting, that's why. It's the same reason why so many people find it hard to take a break from myLotting all day long! haha

@lovebuglena I am the same way. I am on and off my computer all throughout the day.

@lovebuglena yeah i learned to balance it. When i play a mission takes up 20 minutes so time flies. I play online and fornite is online so you play with other people. I play grand theft auto 5 and have my own female character. I have a house in the game and cars etc. It's like a whole world in there. The map of the game is los angeles California.

how old are they? you can't expect them to do puzzles or lego if they're older than 8. reading books isn't much fun for kids these days, which is sad, but the good thing is that they have some interest at least, even though it's gaming. i don't think that's the bad thing, except for their eyes maybe.

One is 12. The other I think is 10. The younger one loves LEGO. And LEGO is for people of all ages... so doesn't matter how old you are.

@lovebuglena however, some people/kids just don't like playing with lego. but everything is interesting to younger kids, later they start having their own interests and you can't really force them to do something they don't want

We did many different things growing up. I bought one of the games I used to play as a child just the other day.
