The Bahamas

Linda and I have been horrified to see the damage to The Bahamas. We vacationed there in 2006 and they are the friendliest people you could ever meet.
A few years before we were there they had been hit by a hurricane but nowhere near as severe as Dorian. A lot of the houses were made of concrete but from what I've read, these buildings are built to withstand a Cat 3. Even then, the storm surge was over the roofs.
The islands are coral rather than volcanic and so they are flat. I doubt that the highest point is more than 5 or 10 feet above sea level.
The last I heard the official death toll was at 7. Looking at the destruction I can't believe that it is actually much higher.
I feel bad for the Americans who will soon feel the effects of Dorian but, at worst, it will be far better than what happened to The Bahamas. Let's not forget to pray for the Bahamians as they begin the recovery process. By that I mean help out financially. Skip a movie or a dinner out and send it to them.

I saw some of the latest news clips and the devastation is huge and it seems that there are more deaths. It is horrible!

@garysibi I just saw a news story that mentioned 20 just now. So sadly, I'm sure it will go up.

@1hopefulman I saw that also. That's just on Great Abaco Island. It doesn't include Grand Bahamas Island which is larger, more populated and had the hurricane stall over it.

I saw some video clips from the Bahamas when the storm was stalled over the island. It was terrifying. I saw one elderly man talk about how he and his wife got on top of a bookshelf. The water pulled her from his arms and she drowned in front of him.
