A Voluntary Assisted Dying bill is being introduced in West Australia's government

Australia has what is often called a ‘Westminster’ system of government. There is an Upper and a Lower ‘House’. For a bill to become law, it must be passed by both Houses. The latest bill being introduced into West Australia’s parliament is creating a huge amount of controversy and interest. It is a ‘voluntary assisted dying (VAD) bill’. This has passed an elementary first step. WA is only the second state to have reached this stage. Basically, this bill would give terminally ill WA adults the right to access voluntary euthanasia. There are 184 clauses in the controversial bill and despite the lower house sitting till 5.20am, only 50 clauses were debated in the 20 hours. When, and if, the bill passes the lower house, it seems that getting it passed through the Upper House will be even more challenging. The fight for VAD isn’t over yet. It is a very contentious issue, fraught with opportunities for misuse. I’m not asking for your opinion although, of course, you’re free to give it. However, the bill is creating an immense amount of interest. The photo is of an expanse of white everlastings. They look like clouds laid upside-down on the earth which I suppose is acceptable for a land down under.

If a person is really terminal and in a lot of pain I can see them wanting to end it all.

Some deaths are peaceful but some are anything but. Some of those against the bill are pushing for more funding for palliative care.

Just more examples of government thinking that they know what is best for the individual.

So do you think they shouldn't be buying into it?

@JudyEv - I don't believe that the government should have any say at all in what an individual chooses to do with their own body or life, as long as it's not affecting anybody else. It's usually because some angry old men are trying to rule based upon their own beliefs. Abortion is one such issue. It's a decision that should be made by the woman, and nobody else. If someone is terminally ill and wants to end it, that should be entirely up to them, and them only.

It is not legal in too many places. It can be interesting how it plays out.

It's legal in several European countries at the moment. It's not at all certain that it will be adopted here.

@JudyEv Its not legal here. After working in nursing homes I agree with it. We ask our loved ones to endure a lot just because people should not die artificially. But yet if I did the same things to an animal they would say I was cruel.

@wolfgirl569 Exactly. Some deaths are very, very awful - not always from pain. Those suffering from MS or Motor Neurone Disease virtually suffocate.

I'm on the fence with this . I can see both sides and don't know what I would do if I was in the position to make a decision

It is a real dilemma in many ways. It's hard to say what my decision would be until I'm in that position but I reckon I'd like a choice.

It's a tough issue for sure. I have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand I do generally support that people should be able to do what they want with their life, I am not sure it should be encouraged. But if someone is really sick and not really living, I can easily see why someone would not want to live in pain. Like I said, it's tough.

It is tought - and legalising it opens up the way for its misuse and abuse. Hopefully the safeguards in place will help a lot.

@porwest In some ways, that's true - about 'dying if they want to' but old folks being treated unkindly in nursing home don't have any options and this is about choosing to end your own life with a bit of dignity - not blowing your brains out or having someone find you hanging in a shed.

@JudyEv True. I agree. Although many people in this situation choose more 'quiet' methods like downing a bunch of pills or something. I think most people asking for help are those who do not have the ability to do it themselves, like someone with ALS for example. Either way.

I can see where this would be helpful for some people. I think it’s good it will be limited to only certain situations and people. Someone whose depressed shouldn’t be able to just go in and be put to sleep so it’s good they will have clauses etc.

I think they need three separate okays from doctors - something like that. It won't be easy but at least it will be an option.

Opportunities for misuse glare at me. And there will be many who will exploit the situation. Having said that if the concerned person wants to die so be it

You're quite right but it seems the criteria to be allowed this option are very strict. At the moment it looks like three doctors will have to give their opinion on whether the person should be allowed this option.

We're having a similar process here at the moment too Judy. I think the bill has passed the first stage, but I haven't hear anything for a couple of weeks.

This has a long way to go yet. There are a number of clauses and of course every party has to 'appear to' fight every inch of the way.

People here have to travel to Holland if they want VAD. I think it should be everyone's right to choose to be able to die with dignity.

I think so too. After seeing the poor folk in nursing homes, some with no one to advocate for them, I'd vote for it.

Categorically yes. I want to be able to decide for myself. Doctors are not always able to control pain levels and deaths from diseases like motor neurone disease are awful.

I am all for such laws, if a person has terminal suffering they should have the option to end their life if they want to, in my humble opinion.

I am not going to state my opinion since it is my opinion and I don't have the right or the need to try to impose it on others. But to date when a choice is allowed, nothing good has followed.

The everlastings are very lovely. Sometimes both sides of the road are covered in them. There are pink and yellow ones as well.
