The Red Coat Trail

The last few days we did a fair amount of driving. Not necessarily covering a lot of miles, but seeing things off the beaten path. It would have been easy to hop on the TransCanada Highway and drive at high speeds across the country. We opted to take the road less travelled. Th roads were paved, but were narrow, winding and passed through many small communities. The Red Coat Trail cover the paths ridden by the North West Mounted Police, the predecessor for th Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). The size of our country is astounding. The prairies are something outside my experience. I've seen flat farmland as far as the eye can see. I've seen random mountains and canyons long the way. Grazing land, and we timed it right....lots of fields being harvested. Along the way there are different markers and monuments. This marker was at the fence line along the road.

Your country is immense, we have not the habit to such large spaces here in Europe.

@Morleyhunt We never crossed Canada, but we crossed the United States through the old Route 66, many years ago. We loved!

When you drive across the country you become very aware of its vastness. So far we have driven more than 6000 km since leaving home.

This will be a memory to cherish.I prefer the off beaten paths. They ae more exciting than zooming down the highway. I remember what the roads are like in Canada. I am glad you had a good time.

When my parents drove to Alaska, they took the shortest route to get there, thru the states partially and then along the Trans-Canada for a distance I believe. But the details of their trip greatly differ from that of yours. Yours sounds much more like the trip of a lifetime then theirs did. Of course when my parents left, my Dad had the a/c fixed in his truck, but it broke down when they were near Alaska, and garages in Alaska don't necessarily carry parts for a/c units in stock, that was mostly what I remember about the stories of their trip across the country and up to Alaska. That and that the roads were bumpy because she wrote about it in 1 of her postcards to our son, he kept them all so we have it here someplace.

@Morleyhunt I’m on my lunch break at work right now. I took a call from a customer in NS a couple of hours ago and they are expecting heavy winds later on today, everything is closed. Even the bank!

We try to look at the humour when things don't go as planned. Public bathrooms (even what we refer to as "$hit shacks") being open has made this journey easier to appreciate. A trek down a long, under construction road...then a gravel road to a National Park....only to find it closed for the season (we could have checked in advance) and locked up to make it totally inaccessible, wasn't all that funny when it happened. The restaurant we planned to stop at....we'd seen signs for 100 or more kilometres....closed (probably for more than a year) left us digging in our snack bag. For the most part the roads have been good.

@Juliaacv we have heard from our neighbours. Currently they have no hydro. Lots of rain and wind. We wait for an update in the morning.

@Morleyhunt I'm not sure I still have this one but I'll look for it. We had it when I was a teenager so I'd guess about 1964 or 5.

Often we can see for miles....not a house, not a tree....not as much as a feed bin.

Cool! I hope your house doesn't blow away while you're gone. Dorian looks like it's headed there next.
