Be Aware of Your Environment

Hey, friends, about 28 hours ago I was in a night shift, watching cables in a small hole. Those cables were for electricity supply for a new building near the hole. That building is still being built. I saw someone and I didn't suspect anything, this man went somewhere at about 4:30 after midnight. It turns out that this man burned 3 cars not far away from me. During my night shift. I was being asked if I saw the man, and if that men held a helmet, a big bottle of benzine (I think it is called a jerry can, or a tank ). I could not tell it and I didn't remember the hour I saw him. I was so sorry for not being aware of my surroundings. Even if it was not my job. I thought those were trash workers who prepared the trash cans for a truck. Police came, fire fighters, ambulance...this event was on the news. I have learned to be more aware, write notes about what I see around me, write the time, I can never know if something is suspicious or not. Your take mylotters, do you remember any event you saw something happening and didn't suspect anything. Was there any event you suspected something ?

Wow! No, nothing like that has happened in my surroundings. They do say that if you suspect something to call the police.

@DianneN Maybe it can help to prevent what the suspect is up to do. I think it is a good idea.but, the suspect is not being caught red handed.

@DianneN try once in a while to take a look around your house, look for people and try to figure out what they do.

It's hard to pay attention to people when we do not suspect that there was something wrong.

Very hard, it makes me think about spies and detectives, how they think. If they see something, they ask themselves "why is it here", they pay attention to details, they know body language...

@LadyDuck that is hard. You are doing good. I will watch people a little more from now on. See what they are doing.

@stringer321 I pay attention to details and often I can say who I have met while I am outside, but I cannot remember everyone I met.

Gosh burned 3 cars, it's very vulnerable. A few years ago I witnessed people burning gas stations.

@stringer321 I didn't pay much attention to it, they used motorbikes and wore black uniforms and their faces were covered. Just it, I don't know how much.

@May2k8 ok, they made some preparations, it was too hard to get more details like license numbers and etc...they knew in advance how to commit the crime...

@May2k8 were you able to tell what car they had ? How did they look ? How many were they? ( I'm not asking, but, just to understand if you were aware enough to pay attention).

@TiarasOceanView What about you? Was there any event you were alerted and noticed something suspicious ? Or maybe you didn't notice ?

@crazyhorseladycx I guess I can learn some alertness from the best, dogs are awesome. Are there many people who come and go in your area? Maybe workers, maybe clients of some business near your home....

@crazyhorseladycx wow!!! thank you for a detailed respond. It makes me happy to see users like you :-) In my area there is a lot of traffic, people just hang out at night at the streets, so it is hard to suspect everyone. I will start taking notes once in a while, to see who walks, where, what time...

@stringer321 some're awesome, others jest seem to bark't all. i live out'n the country, though town keeps encroachin'. too many neighbors out here fer me. when the hubs finally retires, we may jest sell out 'n move elsewhere. i dislike the thought 's i love my land. jest not so'n love with all the 'progress'. there's quite a bit 'f traffic durin' the day, though not certain why? lots 'f semi-trucks use our road (coz the city slickers petitioned to get 't paved - jest one other long standin' neighbor'n us fought such) to 'void havin' to deal with the d.o.t. 't night we've the same, but lil other traffic. there's been many break-ins 'round here, e'en durin' the day. none closer'n a mile to's. sadly many pay no mind to what'd be goin' 't their neighbors. one 'tis a retired police detective/now brand inspector. his wife'd be home durin' the day, but ne'er seemed to notice that their neighbors 'd been victim to such. i hear tell someone came with a trailer 'n jest loaded all they could - in broad daylight! purty brazen... my sweet momma lives near the edge 'f town. i talked her 'nto security camera's all 'round. gives a great view 'f her place front/back'n sides 's well 's the street 'n neighbors'n each side. she's 'lso a home security system. she's elderly 'n doesn't get 'round well these days. the aunt'n eldest son live with her, but 're glued to their puters when not sleepin' - so're no help to keep a watchful eye.

I have not faced anything similar. But at times, identifying arsonists is not an easy task. Yet it does pays to be attentive to our surroundings.

@stringer321 there are many streets in Manila that are dangerous, when in a dangerous place I trained my eyes to look side to side instead of just straight and be conscious if somebody is following me. When my children were small, we enjoyed playing in the mall and park, I played with them but half my attention is in the surroundings. I avoid packages, boxes and things like that that are left unattended. Our countries share a somewhat similar kind of threat

@louievill good awareness, you look also to the sides. You are being aware about people who may follow you. I used to walk with my dog at the middle of the night, after coming back from salsa dancing. I once saw a bunch of people just walk, I decided to keep an eye on them, when they passed by. One of them tried to open a car, to see if the door is not locked. Luckily nothing happened. It was locked.

wow. I wish I was more observant about my neighbor. One night a few years ago, I heard my neighbor yelling for help. I did call for help and the police came, but I couldn't really tell them what happened. I think he might have fell and hit his head on his sofa table. I don't know.

@JESSY3236 aww, so nothing you heard or saw before that, alright. It is good to be active sometimes instead of passive. Nevertheless, I am most of the times passive, and I don't think about things that can happen in advance. Sometimes I do. While working, I imagine hostile or thieves, where they will come from and what they will do. So I can make sure those things won't happen.

What a situation. Things happen, and you are right, you need to always be very aware of your surroundings. Especially nowadays. There are a metric butt ton of nuts out in the world today.

@stringer321 Metric is a non-standard unit of measure. The United States uses the standard system while most of the rest of the world uses the metric system. On the latter statement, I wholeheartedly agree with you.
