Coping with pain

Things have been both bad and good lately. The bad first, to get it over with. My pain has moved into the chronic, very chronic stage. It feels like my arthritis is getting worse, and I am trying to move around more to keep it at bay, but the results are very mixed. I've been using roll-on lidocaine at night to help me go to sleep, and it does help a little for the back. Unfortunately, nothing else is helping for the hip, and that's pretty well maxed out on the painkillers that they can give me. The other distressing thing is that I may have to be paying a lot more on my medicaid account, which doesn't help things at all. Good side. J is getting more receptive on being out and about more. We've tentatively made plans to go up to Stockbridge to visit the Norman Rockwell Museum. Yes, I love going to museums, and I want to go visit the Met before winter sets in. He has also been very good about taking me to the various craft stores for me to load up on supplies. I have a -very- feminist cross-stitch that I want to work up that is subversive as all get out. And I've decided to revive an old hobby of mine -- stamp collecting. I had one as a child, and it was quite nice, until my brother got ahold of it. He utterly destroyed it, and I have never quite forgiven him for that. So I am appealing to my friends here on mylot for any spare stamps you might have about -- yes, I will recompense and even trade with you if you are a collector. Anything to keep the brain active these days. And that is about it. Up very early this morning as I was starting to feel pain in bed, and I needed to change position. Now to get dressed, and fix some tea and toast for breakfast. Still reading James Ellroy's _This Storm._ Talk about a dark read...

I'm sorry to hear about your chronic pain. It must be very debilitating.

It is. People have no idea how much it takes out of you. Some days I'm lucky to get out of bed.

I suppose you've tried water aerobics to help with moving around? I plan to go to water aerobics until folks carry me out. I have a totally cruddy back and knees etc. so I do what I can and ignore the rest of what the teacher says to do. I hope your day gets a little better.

@Telynor Yes!! I hope you do find a place to get some water exercise sooner than later. I can lift my legs and really exercise-strengthen my muscles in water and I can't out of water. I ended up in physical therapy when I slowly used the treadmill cause it put my sciatic nerve into a tizzy, doing that pounding on the machine.

I want to do that, but I haven't been able to find a program that offers it. Once I do however, I'll be doing it right quick.

@sallypup I have sciatica and scolosis on top of arthritis in my spine, so getting about is not easy for me any more. Sciatica is the most excruciating pain to have to cope with.

When I stay in bed too long I hurt. I try to use as many herbs and spices as I can in my meals as certain ones help with pain. I make a blend of equal parts turmeric, black pepper, ground cumin and ground ginger. I also use a comfrey salve. Not miraculous, but those two things seem to help with pain.

I've heard a lot about tumeric as a general tonic and pain killer. I use it when I make mid-Eastern food or rice. I know that ginger is good to use as well -- a terrific tisane for when you have an upset stomach. Boiling water over a slice of raw ginger in a mug.

It is what it is. Some days are good, others not so good.

I'm trying to. Distraction can be a very good thing. At least by the end of the day I won't be feeling like I'm just a beached whate.

I will be praying for healing for you. I'm sorry about your collection, if you can try to forgive your brother-love and family is more important than any material on this Earth. Have a lovely day! =)
