Bird Title Top Ten: Songbird (#1)

Hello from somewhere other than my nice new bed! I’m on the road for a foliage view weekend. Given the appointments I have throughout October (primarily PT), I’ll have to go view when I can. This weekend, I can, so here I am! And here’s the best bird song, according to me.
#1: Songbird - Fleetwood Mac
If this were the only song on Rumours worth a darn I’d still say it’s one of the best albums of the 70s.
I’m sure you know the story about the album: the band’s couples (John and Christine McVie, and Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham) were bitterly breaking up, threatening to destroy the band in the process. The result was Rumours, which shows how vicious the break-ups got (“damn your love, damn your lies” in “The Chain,” and “Packing up, shacking up’s all you wanna do” from “Go Your Own Way”).
Amid all that bitterness keyboardist/vocalist Christine McVie offered an olive branch: “Songbird.” This song is a gorgeous love song, a gorgeous “farewell” song (“I wish you all the love in the world, but most of all, I wish it from myself”), and a gorgeous song.
Easily my favorite Fleetwood Mac song.
Thanks for reading.

Beautiful song by the "classy" adult in the band! A complete solo effort recorded away from the studio. McVie wrote the song, sang it, and played the piano part.

Come on! I saw Mick Fleetwood keep drumming while they poured booze into his mouth. Didn't miss a beat. Now THAT's classy!

This is nice but I never heard this one. I love a lot of Fleetwood Mac songs, Must have missed it because it is from my favorite album. I'll have to put that album on on YouTube

As you know, I'm also partial to Jesse Winchester's "My Songbird." If you listen, can you tell who is singing harmony?

You sure you don’t want that Stevie Nicks/Geddy Lee/Donald Fagen album for Christmas?
The mere thought of Stevie Nicks singing this song while Christine wasn’t in the band makes me sick to my stomach.

I think Christine has such a pretty voice. I much prefer her songs over Stevie's, to be honest.

@FourWalls - Honestly, when I saw Fleetwood Mac, they were more entertaining when she was offstage changing outfits. They got to rock out.
