Our weekly Friday date night had to be canceled. We were invited to a fancy catered dinner party at the home of a former student. All those invited played a very important role in Jen’s life.
Jen had a brain infection shortly after birth which resulted in her having the IQ of a 5 year old for life.
When she became my student in third grade, she didn’t speak, read, or write. Over the next several years that she was a student in my classroom, she learned how to read on the first grade level, write simple sentences, speak to me and the other students, do simple math, and get 100 on her weekly spelling tests! We bonded so well.
I’ve remained friends with Jen’s family over the years. We often meet them for dinner, go to fundraisers to raise money for students with special needs, and at times meet up at the same spa!
I caught Jen giggling and texting with her best friend before dinner last night. Her friend has Downs Syndrome.

That is wonderful. What a huge influence you made on her life. My teacher is a special needs teacher and she loves it so much. She really bonds with her students and becomes a big part of their lives even after they leave school.

I’m sure you meant your friend and not YOUR teacher. lol
I still maintain contact with many favorite students and their parents. However, I’m trying to avoid one who wants to go out to lunch. She and her mother would come to visit me every single Friday after school, no matter what school I was in, and all I wanted to do was start me weekend!
