Such low offers

Earlier this year I went to a job interview. I dressed nice. I updated my resume and printed it out. I was offered the job as assistant manager only to discover that it paid $11 per hour. At the time I was being paid $10.55 per hour for job as associate trainer PLUS tips. Bring me up to about $12 per hour most days depending on how good our team tips are. Why would I want less money per hour for more work? I asked how much a General Manager would make to do the math of what I could potentially earn if I worked my way up. I was told $15 per hour. I graciously declined the offer. Another job reached out to me on monster.com and offered me a position as shift manager and again offered just $11 per hour. I currently earn $10.90 per hour PLUS tips, putting me at about $13 an hour on a good day. I work hard at my job. I don't slack off. I always look for extra work to do if I find myself bored. I do have a 4 year college degree. I may not really use it in my day to day work life working in food service, but I know my worth. Work smarter, not harder. I'm not leaving my current job for something that'll pay me less for what I bring to the table.

Just a bit of history when I worked in JBL Inc (makers of stereo speakers) in California. That was 1988 and I was hired as computer operator earning $15 an hour. Gee, that was a long time ago.

My first job was in 1994 as a day camp counselor. That was $4.25 per hour minimum wage. $15 in 1988? That must have seemed like so much money.

@acrogodess I was earning like $900 per week because of overtime. Yeah, big money indeed but I got lonely so I came back home to the Philippines.

Yes. I’m not necessarily unhappy where I’m at, I’m just at a point where I need a little more money to get my bills paid, but I won’t leave to go somewhere that values my time and effort less.

Low ballers are a lot in the job industry. I'm in the same boat. I wouldn't leave my current job for another one that offers to pay less. Just doesn't make any sense. There will be exceptions of course but I haven't seen much.

Yeah if I legitimately could work my way up to a higher salary I might accept the pay cut but to earn less, and only earn a little more after working my way up... no way!

That sounds frustrating. I am glad that you said no. You can do better. What is a good wage to make there?

I can get my bills paid with what I’m currently earning but both kids have gone back to school (as opposed to being homeschooled) so I have additional expenses

These job offers are such a waste of my time. Especially with how long some of these applications take.

I have a lot of people trying to give me career advice lately. I know what I am capable of. I know I can work “better” jobs than a food service job, but this one is flexible with my time which is important to me as a single mom and pays me better than most would.

They’re supposed to be opening up a new position soon. I’m the most qualified there of all our non management staff so we will see

No. And I definitely wouldn’t be a general manager somewhere for $15 an hour. That’s a whole lot of work for so little money especially as the company is known to stiff people on their time and a half.
