most people have trouble with this, I know I did. it helps to find what you have in common with the person. it helped me to think of anyone I talked to as a friend because I'm not shy around my friends. and sometimes you have to fake confidence until it feels real. she's probably just as nervous as you are!
good luck with it, and welcome to mylot :)

Faking confidence is an excellent suggestion. I remember when I was first promoted into management, having to stand among the people I used to be working shoulder to shoulder with, I was shaking in my boots, (Very afraid I would do something stupid.) I straightened my back and said the things expected of me, and when issues came up I dealt with them. (The first time, I did ask my manager to stand in earshot to hear the conversation just in case I got into a bind. He later complemented me on how I handled the issue.) I had zero confidence I could deal with the person involved, a known troublemaker and very connected with the union so my wording had to be right. The man asked to be transferred from my work team. Portraying confidence when one doesn't feel it is hard, but maybe having a friend nearby can give that extra piece of strength that seems to slip away in such situations.

@Ladanger I have done that before too. Many times. It helps.

Don't show that you are shy. Pretend you are confident in what you are saying! Try and get her to talk about herself and her interests then that should open the conversation a bit more. Good luck!
