Tomorrow is his birthday

Hello to you, and how are you?
Tomorrow is my father in law birthday and I want to give a surprise gift for him and my husband and I were going to navotas to celebrate his birthday tomorrow.
My father in law called us that he prepared the other things to use for his birthday for tomorrow, and I'm so excited for it.
But I don't know what the best gift to give for him. This morning I decided to buy a t shirt which is his favorite style of shirt to wear always but my husband said my father in law had many shirts he said we need to give more special gift for him so I don't know what is it.
Can you give me some idea on what to gift for him for the birthday.

Does he have a favorite treat that he doesn't eat often? Or a favorite board game? Or maybe a favorite book / author?
Does he wear cufflinks?
Does he wear ties?
Would he wear bedroom shoes?

Oh I think I can't afford that now, coz last month our house was burned all our things are gone, and now were staying at my aunt house with her family.

I'm not very good at this unless I really know the person well or happen to spot something that is their style. Today is my daughter's birthday. I bought her a wall hanging that has a tree that makes me think of the movie Avatar. Saturday we will take her to a Mexican restaurant.
