Something I would like to share.
Let’s talk about Medusa.
She was a fair beautiful maiden who was cursed by the goddess Athena. Medusa was born of incredible beauty. Medusa was not always considered to be a Monster. Medusa was the only mortal out of 3 sisters, her parents were Phorcy and Ceto, two primodial deities of the sea known as Gorgons.
Athena was goddess. Medusa respected the goddess Athena. Because of the respect she had for the goddess, she remained pure. Hence, she will eventually become the priestest of Athenas temple.
Medusa possessed great beauty initially, and many men lost it for Medusa. Many people would visit Athenas temple just for a glance of Medusa. They even claim that her hair rival that of Athena. It wasn’t long before Athenas jealousy for Medusa became recent.
One day, when Medusa was walking along a shore, she caught the attention of Poseidon “the god of the sea.” He was instantly infactuated of her. Medusa rejected multiple approaches from Poseidon because if she wish to remain the priestest of Athena’s temple, she must stay a virgin. Poseidon was in the middle of a conflict with Athena and he saw Medusa as a possession that he could take from the goddess.
Eventually, Poseidon grew tired of been rejected by Medusa. He decided that he will take her by force. Medusa in fear of her life, ran into Athenas temple with the hopes that the goddess will offer her protection. There was no protection given that evening, and Poseidon had his was with Medusa.
When Poseidon had finished, Athena did appear in rage by the events that had just taken place. She decided that she would punish Medusa, as punishment against the gods such as Poseidon was considered unthinkable, but she considered Medusa guilty of seducing a god and bringing dishonour to the temple and the goddess.
Athena cursed Medusa.
The hair that she was once so envious of, she turned it into a head of venomous snakes. Anyone who looked at Medusa’s eye will turned into stone.
Words spread of the monster that Medusa had become. And she became the target of many warriors who wish to add her head to their list of trophies. All that tried shared the same faith of been turned into stone.
Until the hero Perseus, son of Zeus tasked of retrieving her head. In order to complete this task, Perseus required aid from the gods. He was given a helmet from ‘Haides that made him invisible to Medusa, a pair of winged sandals from ‘Hermes’ allowing him to reach Medusa.
Athena gave him a brown shield able to reflect the gaze of Medusa, and lastly he was given a sword sharp enough to cut off the head of Medusa.
With all these divine gifts, Perseus was able to behead Medusa.
At the time of her death, Medusa was pregnant with the offspring of Poseidon. And from her shred blood, was born the Giant creator and the Pegasus horse.
Perseus will use the head of Medusa to aid him in several Adventures, and it played a crucial role when defeating the titan acrisius.
Medusa is probably one of the most misunderstood characters in Greek Methologies, she is often regarded as a cruel monster. She had only the best intentions and placed her trust in the goddess Athens who who ultimately failed her and punished her for actions that would be under her control.
Her story shows us that even the gods are prone to sins that they so heavenly pride themselves above.
Even in death, Medusa can be seen as a symbol of good, as her head is used as a protective amulet to evil away.
The end.
