Maintenance of normal glucose levels depends on pancreatic hormones, insulin and glucose. Therefore in the fasting state glucose is largely produced by the liver and approximately 70% to 80% of the body glucose produced by the liver use by the brain.
In addition that the insulin sensitive tissues and principally muscles and fat use only small quantities of glucose in the absence of increased insulin level.
Growth hormones like thyroid hormones and steroid hormones serve as a long term modulator of hepatic glucose production. Hepatic glucose output in the short term modulate by insulin, glucagon and glucose level itself.
Insulin plays a huge role of hepatic glucose production. Hence the reductions of insulin result in slow rise in hepatic glucose output.
