My mother's remedy was to say "Think of oranges". You had to picture the colour, the shape and, above all, to think of the smell. Strangely enough, it usually worked for us children!
The other remedy was to fill a cup or a mug with water and to 'drink it backwards', in other words, put your lips to the opposite side of the cup than normal and, carefully tipping the cup away from you, try to drink without spilling the water. It's not easy and the concentration needed plus the exercise of drinking small amounts of water and swallowing really does work as a cure for hiccups.

Close your nose with your fingers and slowly drink a glass of water with your nose closed. It works
