Pet Insurance?

Have you ever considered or bought pet insurance? I'd heard about it in passing but never really gave it much of a thought. Until today.
We pet owners are a tough breed. When we really love our pets, we will do just about anything to keep them going, no matter what. And that's where I am right now. Tough spot and a little vulnerable, I admit. And I'm trying to lead with my head and not just my heart. And it's so difficult.
I took Timothy to the vet today for his annual checkup. Where I live, we have to prove that our pets see a vet annually or else we risk losing our apartments. I'm very glad for this because I'd miss vet appointments in the past with other pets and when they got sick and passed away, I always felt guilty. And that leads me to the problem today.
Timothy seems to have a heart murmur. Last year, he was diagnosed with one, but since he was only 1 year old then, the vet said it could be nothing and decided to wait a year to check again. Today we saw a different vet and she seemed concerned, which of course, put fear in the pit of my stomach. She told me that a specialist comes in once a week to do testing, but he charges $300. That might as well be a million for me. Can't do it. The vet pointed me in the direction of another place that might be able to help me.
And then I was contacted by a pet insurance company. Since Tim got a clean bill of health today (according to them, anyway), he's eligible for insurance. That insurance would pay 90% of tests and medications and any follow ups for the same condition. That means I'd have to pay my deductible (I decided on $100) and only $30 for the test! And if he needs medication, I would only pay 10% of those. I had to sign up under the circumstances. The money premium isn't bad and it gives me some peace of mind going forward.
So, first of all, have any of you had to deal with pet heart murmurs? And what about insurance?
Thanks!
Peace
Claudia

There is no pet insurance yet here but maybe if there is we would consider it.

We've had it here for so many years, but I've never heard anyone talk about it. Maybe people don't want to spend the extra money on their pets. But as they age and get sick, it becomes very expensive. This is one way of helping with all the costs. Have a great day Alex!

Our daughters used to do competitive horseback riding and we had pet insurance for their horses. We were glad we had it. We had several times when the horses got sick, and one had to have surgery once. I don't know what we would have done without the insurance.

@CRK109 - I agree with you. I do not have a pet right now, but if I got one I think I would also get pet insurance. It can cost a fortune if your pet gets sick or injured.

I can't even imagine what surgery on horses would cost! Yes, insurance is surely a must in those cases. Of course, even regular vet appointments for our pets have increased in costs lately, and everything else is becoming astronomical. Insurance really is a great way to go.
