Have we lost Thanksgiving?

My niece and I were having a discussion earlier this evening, when she brought up the subject of Thanksgiving. She made our Thanksgiving Day reservations today and wanted to let me know. Of course, when she broached the subject to the person on the phone of vegans and vegetarians, the person said they haven't made their menu for that day yet but she assumed there would be something on the menu for us to eat. No promises, I guess.
And then my niece went into a rant about how no one should be listening to Christmas music or decorating yet because we need to concentrate on Thanksgiving. As someone who is thankful to God every day, I think of Thanksgiving as part of the Christmas Season. It's not at all overlooked by me. But for her, it has been lost.
The older I get, the more I believe in "live and let live". I live alone and sometimes get lonely. Christmas music and decorating often bring me a sense of peace. I don't feel that I'm breaking any rules. The older my niece gets, the more rigid are her rules. More and more we are losing that place in the middle in which to meet. I just keep trying to let it go.
We all have our traditions and beliefs and I think they are all wonderful! Loving each other regardless of our differences would be such a beautiful thing!
Peace
Claudia

I think your attitude is much the best. Your niece sounds like she is in for a lot of angst in the future if she continues to get so uptight about people and their attitudes. I hope you enjoy your Thanksgiving. It's not celebrated here.

My niece is becoming a grumpy old woman! lol I mostly let her be and when I'm with her or speaking with her on the phone, I put on my smiley voice and be as positive as I can be. She drains me, so I can't be around her as much as I normally would be.

I can understand here. I honestly don’t do anything Christmas related other then shopping till After thanksgiving is over. Only because I think Thanksgiving is the forgot holiday. People are always so focused on the best present possible or out doing the next they forget about the days leading up to Thanksgiving and what happens after. My kids asked where’s all the thanksgiving stuff mom. My answer was “people have stop thinking of being thankful and are more able being greedy.”
I love Christmas and all the colors but that’s the time of giving to give to others and thanksgiving is for giving thanks for what they have.

I wish it could just be that way. Since there will be four of us at Thanksgiving dinner, I hope she'll be outnumbered enough to at least try to smile once in a while. Things could be so much worse in her life.
