do you check the expiration dates of the food products you buy?

My husband will just pick the items and put them into the cart without checking the expiration dates. there was a time that he picked a gallon of cooking oil which was equivalent to 5 liters and was to expire in 5 days!
Imagine, had we did not notice it, we would have to fry the whole day perhaps just to consume the oil.
I, as much as possible, pick those that are to expire in 2 or 3 years.
What about you, do you check when the products expire before buying them?

that 5 gallon of cooking oil would be more suited to those with a food business.
few months back, i saw mayonnaise buy 1 take 1. i'm glad i asked the staff to confirm the expiration date because the first 2 digits was actually the year, not the month.

@Janet357 no, no. what i mean is it's the usual format xx/xx/xx, but i thought it was month/day/year, but it was actually year/month/day.

I check expiration dates, I'm a prepper , I love to stock up on essentials and canned goods and I'm the one who sees to it that the supply is rotated and those with near expiration dates are consumed first.

@Janet357 stocking food and basics like toiletries and some meds like vitamins is also a good hedge against inflation, what your 5,000 pesos can buy today won't buy the same amount next year or maybe in just a few months, yes now it's days because prices go up during the holidays. Honey never spoils and I think pasta could last for 20 years if stored properly.

@Janet357 We try to keep a few things on standby so if we run out we have another in the pantry. Our nearest shop is 7 kms away. We are often there once or twice a week. Vince goes to golf twice a week usually although he has a sore shoulder at the moment.

The dates don't usually bother me unless it's something like milk-that I definitely check!

The expiration date is a guide and not strictly the life of the product. Cooking probably lasts much longer than the date stamped. No need to hurry in consuming. We have the habit of checking the expiration date particularly perishable goods like fruit juice and milk.

@Janet357 but if it was long expired then that is a different story.

You are right. I always check the expiration dates on items. However, there was a report on TV recently that said that it doesn't matter. I strongly disagree because I got sick from eating a can of Dinty Moore Beef Stew and it was only a day after the expiration date. I didn't think that it would matter because it was only a day late but I began vomiting 20 minutes or so after eating it.
