Anecdote in Los Angeles

I was smoking while waiting for the bus in front of the LA city hall. A black guy came near and asked for a cigarette. I said no more. He pointed to my shoulder bag and with a bullying tone asked me to open the bag. I am a bantamweight and no match for a middleweight bully. As I slowly opened my bag, he asked if I was Mexican. I said, no, I am a Filipino.
The bully hastily left as if he had seen the devil. Something wrong with what I said? When I got home, my cousin said that Filipinos are notorious in gang wars in that area. Nice one.
